Hi I'm interest in finding out info on Ann Syme daughter of John Syme & Janet Henderson i believe she married a William McGachie and i think they are my GG Grandparent but would like to confirm this thanks

Your Janet Henderson is my 1st Cousin 5 times removed and daughter Ann is my 2nd Cousin 4 times removed .... but I have never followed her up .... only Amelia, as you can see below. Janet's sister Jean married a William Livingston in 1805 .... The Amelia Syme line finishes up with Buckby in NZ.
1. Janet HENDERSON was born on 03 Oct 1786 in Wemyss, Fife, Scotland. She died on 16 May 1857 in Kelty, Beath, Fife, Scotland. The cause of death was Inflamation of the bowels.
Janet married James SYME son of John SYME and Amelia GIB on 12 Aug 1805 in Wemyss, Fife, Scotland. James was born on 04 May 1786 in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. He died before 1857 in Kelty, Beath, Fife, Scotland.
They had the following children:
2 F i. Jean SYME was born on 07 Dec 1805 in Halbeath, Fife, Scotland.
3 M ii. John SYME was born on 07 Jun 1808 in Halbeath, Fife, Scotland.
4 F iii. Amelia SYME was born on 24 May 1810 in Halbeath, Fife, Scotland. She died in 1883 in Beath, Fife, Scotland.
Amelia married James PAUL [Master Slater] on 11 Dec 1835 in Beath, Fife, Scotland. James was born in 1810 in Fife, Scotland. He died on 28 Jan 1873 in Ballingry, Fife, Scotland.
5 M iv. William SYME was born on 16 Jul 1812 in Halbeath, Fife, Scotland.
6 M v. Adam SYME was born on 08 Sep 1814 in Halbeath, Fife, Scotland.
7 M vi. James SYME was born on 25 Feb 1817 in Halbeath, Fife, Scotland.
8 M vii. Andrew SYME was born on 06 Jun 1819 in Halbeath, Fife, Scotland.
9 F viii. Ann SYME was born on 03 Aug 1821 in Halbeath, Fife, Scotland.
10 M ix. David SYME was born in 1823 in Halbeath, Fife, Scotland.

Hi again Lester,
I have just found the 29th January 1863 death reg. in Cleish House, Kinross of unmarried Ann Syme born in 1821 to James Syme and Janet Henderson, She was a Schoolmistress.
So, she is not your Ann Syme who from OPR marriages in 1845 appears to have been an ANNE BURLEIGH SYME.
Sorry ... we are not linked here ... but still may be through Livingston ?

Thanks for that info greatly appreciated its very difficult here in NZ to find info yes i think that she is more likely to be the one im looking for as Burliegh was the name of my Great Grandparent home here in Napier and i think one of there children also has that name

Hi Lester,
As I was unable to trace William McGachey/McGaghey/McGachie/etc and his wife Anne Burleigh Syme anywhere in Scotland after their marriage in 1845, I feel that they may have emigrated .... Ireland (as from the 1881 Census data, most McGachie folks in Scotland appeared to originate in Ireland) or more probably, due to your Burleigh name evidence to NZ, c. 1850.
I could look up the actual 1845 OPR marriage registration for you and send it to you by e-mail attachment if you wish it.

William was a spirit dealer in Dundee And died there his wife was listed in the 1871 cencus with my great grand mother and brothers and sister yes i would appreciate the opr my email is (*)

What were the children's forenames and ages in the 1871 Census .... from these, we will get a clue to William and Anne's parents' forenames .... and if listed on OPRs (a big 'if') we may get back to your GGG x 'n' Greats :-)

1. William McGachie did indeed die on 18 September 1862 in Dundee of "long & excessive abuse of Stimulants".
2. His parents were John McGachey and Jane Nish.
3. Anne Burleigh Syme can be found in the 1871 census living as Ann McGachie, widow, in Forgan with Janet 24, Jane 22, Maria 19, William 12.
4. I have not been able to find an OPR for Anne's birth. The 1861 census gives her birthplace as the parish of Orwell (= Milnathort) and the 1871 census as Kinross. Orwell is in the county of Kinross.
5. Nor do I know when she died, but I assume that was in New Zealand.
There is much more about both Anne and William in the public records.

Thank you for your reply on my ancestors, jane came to New Zealand in 1872 and married a james morrison from Dundee/Newport on Tay i also have Maria coming to NZ and marrying a John Henderson
in NZ haven't been able to find what happened to Anne or Janet or William have a lead of a Anne Burleigh Syme Mcgachie in Austrilia but am having problems finding info

A difficulty of course is the very many variants in spelling of the name McGeachy/McGeachie/McGachie/McGachey. I too have come across Anne Burleigh Syme McGeachie in Australia, but cannot make the connection.
Some of the information I have is copyright and so I must be careful not to breach the terms of this forum. You might be intrigued to know however that I inherited a note in my own family's history to the effect that Maria "married her cousin". As with all family lore, this may have to be treated with a pinch of salt until verified, but John Henderson's full name was John Syme Henderson. So look to the Syme name for the link.
I'd be very interested in anyone who can offer a lead on Anne Burleigh Syme's final location.

Hi yes that is what i had surmised about Maria i have and old Scottish song book from my grandmothers eldest sister, from Anne to John Syme Henderson is a link i had been researching Anne full name is Anne Burleigh Morrison and my grandmother was Grace Syme Morrison

Yes - but a very long way away from your family line! It's simply that papers I inherited suggest that Anne Burleigh Syme may or may not have been the 9th of 12 children of my great-great grandfather, John Syme, b. 1779. Until we track down either a birth record or a death certificate or some other reliable document, I've been unable to confirm, and I have had my doubts.
The marriage banns of 1846 suggest she was from the parish of Kinglassie, which would be right. Unfortunately the 1841 census data for Kinglassie, which would clinch it, are missing.
