REECE family - Sussex
« on: Saturday 07 March 09 14:48 UTC (UK) »

Firstly, I hope Im in the right place,  as I have been told by friends that Sussex is now regarding as being in Kent.

Reece - from Peasmarsh. Sussex

Issac Reece (m) Judith Stone

Isaac Reece - died 1805 - January
Judith Reece - died 1805 - October

Im confused with the death of the above.  They had two known children:

1. Susanna - b. 1799
2. Isaac -  b. 1804

Just wondered if there is anyway to find out more about Isaac and Judith.    I have information - from info about the son Isaac and who married etc,   be interested in finding out more about his parents.

so Im guessing their were raised by a family member.  The Reece family were from Peasmarsh, Sussex.

Hi Jack
If it is the same couple, they seem to have married in St Mary the Virgin, Dover, Kent in 1798.
That fact, and Peasmarsh being on the Sussex-Kent border suggests Isaac had a connection with the sea, either as a merchant sailor or a fisherman.
However, the death dates you have given are only 7 years later, so either they both married late in life or had early deaths.  Alternatively, but less likely, is the coincidence that close to the birth year of their first child, another couple with the same combination of names married in along the coast at Dover.

There are 3 possible contacts on the Genes Reunited Website (Roslyn Hartwig, Dick Oke & Rita Kidd) that share your interest and have an Isaac Reece born Peasmarsh c 1805 in ther family tree.  You may like to try and contact them.  The strongest link would be Roslyn, for in addition she has Isaac senior in her list of research interests.  Rita's focus seems to be more on Judith Stone.

Hope this helps

Hi Roy

On the death certificate of his son - Isaac, Isaac (Snr) was recorded being a soldier. . . although no details I have researched to see what soldier he was.  As Im not sure if there is a data base for soldeirs of that time.

Rita Ridd - is a cousin of mine, most info was given to her by one research and what the family know.  Others I don't know who they are.

Hi Jack
Cant tell you much about the availability of reference material for that area I'm afraid, I'm Brighton based.  I do know 1805 was the mid point of the Napleonic wars and during that time Dover castle was undergoing tremendous reinforcement both structurally and in manpower.  It may therefore help if you try to investigate what Sussex regiments or units of Sussex militia were there around 1798 when the couple married.  So try to obtain a copy of the marriage entry from the Dover Archives, there may be additional info on that, such as regiment or witnesses.

Finally, suggest you also get in touch with Rita (who is a member of Genes) and ask her to try and contact the others on that website who she may have overlooked.  One of them may even have the precise information you are seeking.

Hi Jack

If your ancestor was a soldier and lived in Peasemarsh during the Napoleonic War period - then I would suggest that he had some connection with
the Royal Military Canal which was dug from Pett Level through to Folkestone between 30th October 1804 and its completion in April 1809.

If you Google 'Royal Military Canal' you will find lots of info about the soldiers etc that were involverd with it.
