Hi Kennyg, Thanks very much for the information. If you don' mind do you think there's any chance of finding them in the 1871 Census, if they were in the same place. On the marriage of their son James it seems his father was still alive as it do's not say (Deceased) on it. James their son married Elizabeth Roberts at St Pauls Church, Parish of West Smetwick, District Kings Norton on the 22/5/1871. I was just wandering if James was still living with his parents. Thanks once again for your help.

Hi Scully,
Looks like James Sr wasn't around in 1871. I've found James Jr with his Mother, Jane, listed as a Widow;
Jane Bridge 57, Laundress James Bridge 33, Grinder Joseph Bridge 22, Machine Elizabeth Bridge 17, Dressmaker
Living in Hawthorne Street, Harborne, Smethwick

There's a death registration in Q2 of 1868 for a James Bridge, born about 1813. Registration is in King's Norton Vol 6c, page 238.
Looks like your James Sr.

Hi Kenny, Thanks very much for finding the census & death. Have you ever come across the father being dead but not saying so on the marriage of a child before.

Possibilities include Registrar not picking up on local accents and getting it factually wrong or Father and family becoming estranged (willingly or otherwise) as work is sought more widely during times of recession/depression etc.
Perhaps registration was after marriage and it was the wife who did it and hadn't met/didn't know F-in-Law was dead? Have you got the marriage cert? Did both parties sign?
Did it not suit JB Jr to admit Dad was dead?
Possibilities endless!!
I think the 1871 census is very clear - if they are the right family (and they fit in a number of ways) she's clearly widowed.
Only way to be sure it's the right JB is to pay for the death certificate.
