Mackenzie / Maciver
« on: Sunday 08 March 09 07:11 UTC (UK) »

Hi
I know very little of my family's history, my grandfather John Mackenzie
married Mary Maciver in Gairloch on 2/4/1891.                                        John's birth year is hard to trace, I believe it is 1853 but could be as early as
1848-1849. Mary's birth year appears to be 1864.
In 1891 John was a sailor from Mellon Udrigle while Mary was a crofters daughter from Inverasdale, they sailed for Australia in 1891.
Any information about parentage or family would be appreciated.
                  Cheers GMac.

Hi GMac - this lot look likely;

They are living in a croft in Opinan (couple of miles from Mellon Udrigle).  Alexander is Head with his wife Ann and 5 children.  Mother is Catherine.  Brothers (to Alexander) are Donald, John and Kenneth.

The census of 1891 was taken in night of 5/6 April and so your John and Mary would have been married a few days.  The ages for John and Mary here tally with what you have and John is a Sailor.  What do you think?

Alexander McKenzie     40, Crofter
Ann MacKenzie    36
Louis McKenzie    10
Roderick MacKenzie    8
John McKenzie    5
Hector McKenzie    3
Jessie MacKenzie    1
Catherine McKenzie    80
Donald MacKenzie    49, Fisherman
John MacKenzie    38, Sailor
Mary MacKenzie    27
Kenneth McKenzie    38, Fisherman

Gairloch; ED: 1; Page:  8; Line: 12; Roll: CSSCT1891_18; Year: 1891.

Hi Ev,

As outlined in original post;

"Alexander is Head with his wife Ann and 5 children.  Mother is Catherine.  Brothers (to Alexander) are Donald, John and Kenneth."

Hi Kenny,

Thanks for the info, this is indeed a possibility as John and Mary had
4 children, all born in Australia.

Hector Charles                 1892
Kate Isobel (Katherine)     1894
Jessie                               1898
John Lewis (my father)     1901

So we have a good mix of family names.

Hi Ev,

I notice you showed interest in Kenny's 1891 census results, do you
connect with any of this family?
I am interested to know more about them as it seems they could have been
uncle's and cousins of my fathers, albeit that they would have all passed away by now.

hi GMac

welcome to rootschat  Smiley

my interest is mcvicar(macvicar etc.) in the gairloch/parish of glassary area
so i just wondered if i could be of any help
the census that kenny found(sorry kenny for not reading it properly on your
first post  Embarrassed) looks good
but if you wish to proceed further i would recommend obtaining the
marriage certificate of john mckenzie & mary maciver 1891 gairloch , ross
& cromarty

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/?gclid=CMGi6OyGlpcCFUog3godcketDA

certificate viewable online for 6 credits , 30 credits = 6 GBP(MIN.) but spare
credits could come in useful if you get further back
this should provide the parents of john and mary and help you get further
back
