Dreadful deed in Galway!
« on: Sunday 08 March 09 10:09 UTC (UK) »

You know how you hear old family stories which often turn out to be exaggerations of the facts? Well, I'm really curious to find out about one of my family stories but I don't know that it would even be possible.
The dreadful deed tells of a rape and subsequent birth of a child; it tells of vengeance carried out by the victim's brother on the perpetrator (in the story he was killed); it tells how the brother had to flee overnight and go to live in another country.
The year would be 1934 and I know the locality. All those involved are dead now, including the child who was born after this event.
Does anyone think it would be possible to find something like this in old newspapers, and would it be feasible to have a look-up done?

Thanks Jax,
a quick look suggests that you have to know the day the deed happened before you can look for it.  While one could have an idea, you couldn't really narrow it down that much - especially if you're paying per page!
thanks anyway.

Doesn't look like newspapers are a viable approach.
Does anyone REMEMBER hearing about such a story? The place was Castleblakeney.

Without posting exact details here as it's a fairly recent event- have you tried tracing the brother who had to flee? or a death for the man he was supposed to have killed to narrow down the date?

I think www.irishnewsarchive.com is definitely the way to go. From what I can see on the site, its not pay per view, but 10.00 Euro per 24 hours. You can perform as many searches as you want for that 24 hours.

Sounds like an intriguing case-and definitely one to have made headlines.
