Elizabeth Slora, widow of John Slora - Porter at the Asylum for the Blind - died at St Nicholas, Aberdeen on 14 Jan 1887.  She was the daughter of John Murray, a deceased farmer.  Her son John (who I had thought had died in 1801) who registered her death was not aware of her mother's name.

Always a pity when this happens. Her birth year is relatively consistent around 1808-11 so not sure if that christening entry you have as a potential one in 1803 is the correct one unfortunately  Undecided

What was the date of her marriage to John Slora?

Roll Eyes...Just a thought, I wonder who the William Murray, baker in Forres (from John and Elizabeth's children's christenings) is and whether he could be a sibling to Elizabeth?

John Slorach and Elizabeth Murray were married in Golspie in 1828.

The marriage certificate is for John Slorach, servant, Kirkton and Eliza Murray, servant, Golspie married 7 June 1828; does this match Eliza Murray from Duffus? Or John Slorach from Forres? (Kirkton is half way between Forres and Elgin so may match).

I found a John and Elizabeth Slorach in the 1841 census in Bellie (near Fochabers); it had John aged 40 and Elizabeth aged 45.

Barking up the wrong tree?

I had also thought that William may be Eliza's brother.

HI Stuart

We certainly have the right entries for the family in 1841 and 1851 in Old Marchar with young Charles recently born in the 1851 entry helping to confirm we have the right entries  Smiley

I've tried finding a William Murray, baker born in Elgin/Moray etc in the right sort of time frame and nothing jumping out as yet.

The closest I have been able to find for John Slora on births was this entry:

JOHN SLORACH  20 MAR 1801/ Christening: 24 MAR 1801 Forres, Moray
Parents:JOHN SLORACH    and JANE JUNKEN

Maybe his DC might hold full details on his parents (let's hope if it was son John who reported, he had a better memory!)

From John Slora's DC, he died on 12 Nov 1868 in Spa Street, St Nicholas, Aberdeen.  His death was registered by his son (and next door neighbour) William.  William's memory was slightly better than his brother!  John's parents were John Slora, a farmer and ___ Slora MS Jenkins.  (I had Junken as the MS).

Well, that's good news on John's details  Smiley, would certainly fit with that IGI entry. A couple of other children show to this couple on IGI, all in Forres.

Monica has pointed me in the direction of some of my step-relatives - another couple that didn't get married; at least not too each other: but who am I to judge?

Anyway - some of these individuals appear to have been born in the same place as Elizabeth.

Margaret Murray was born in 1822 in Armydykes, Duffus
Jean Jameson was born in 1824 in Armydykes, Duffus
John Jameson was born in 1826 in Armydykes, Duffus

Elspet Murray was born in 1821 in Airndykes, Duffus

Still not sure where Airndykes or Armydykes is (other than near Duffus!)

Any ideas?

What about contacting the Moray Heritage Centre for help with the placename?  They've been loads of help to me over the years, and are usually pretty quick at getting back to you...

http://www.moray.gov.uk/LocalHeritage/Assets/html_pages/morayheritage.html

You could try their surname search tool as well, there might be some info in there for you:

http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp  (added - I notice this has already been linked to on this thread - apologies!)

Don't know why I didn't think of this before!

Cheers

Thanks Prue,

I'll try the Moray Heritage Centre when they open for the summer; I have tried the surname search, but I do find it awkward.

flst,

Thanks for the suggestion - I hadn't ignored you.  I checked the Moray Heritage web site; they have Ardgye as being in Alves rather than Duffus - no Murray's born there.

Jen has pointed out that I have misread the Heritage Centre opening times, so I will try to find out from a local expert where Eliza was born; I'll let you all know.
