Peterborough baptismal lookup please
« on: Sunday 08 March 09 20:45 UTC (UK) »

Hello there.  I would very much appreciate anyone who could help me find an entry in the baptismal records for Peterborough as this would allow me to take the family tree back another generation (assuming the entry contained names of parents).

The individual I am trying to trace (a great-great-great-grandparent of mine!) is John Sarjeant/Searjeant/Sargent, born Dec 1801, Peterborough.

Any help that anyone could offer on any individual would be greatfully received.  (By the way, I posted this first in the Northamptonshire forum but I haven't received an reply yet.)

Thanks a million,

Mark.

You were right first time! Peterborough was in Northants, so if any board can help that's likely to be the one. If all else fails the parish register has been filmed by the LDS so is available to order and view at your nearest LDS Family History Centre

David

PS Have you looked at the IGI at www.familysearch.org? If he was born Dec 1801 (where did this come from?) he was probably baptised in 1802. The IGI has a baptism in March 1802 but it's a member submission, which are often unreliable

Thanks for taking the time to respond David.

I did find that baptism record in IGI but a 2 to 3 month gap between birth and baptism seemed a long gap to me - perhaps wrongly.  I do have a date of birth for John of 26 Dec 1801 but that came from a distant relative's family tree that she worked on 20 years ago.  I'm just concerned that may have actually used the baptism date for the date of birth (and she's not around any more to ask).

The IGI record shows the baptism in St. John's in Peterborough - how many parishes did Peterborough have at the time, or is this the only one it could be?

Best wishes,
Mark.

I think St John was the only Peterborough parish in 1801, but I've always found Peterborough to be totally incomprehensible!
