Walkers of Thurcaston
« on: Monday 09 March 09 20:06 UTC (UK) »

Hi!

Was wondering if anyone could help clear up a bit of confusion for me.....

My 4x great grandfather was George WALKER, originally of Kirkby Bellars and later of Thurcaston. He had a number of children ( William - 3xg grandfather - Elizabeth, Mary, John, Edward, Alice, Emma and Lucy ).

In the 1841 census he is living in Thurcaston and by 1861 he is listed in St Margaret's and is recorded as a butcher. I haven't yet found him in the 1851 and think he died before the 1871.

The  confusion comes with his wife!

In the 1841 she is recorded as Ann and in the 1861 as Sarah. I can find no record of a death of Ann Walker - are they one and the same person?

Any help gratefully received!

hi, you are very lucky as the leics village site:

http://www.leicestershirevillages.com/thurcaston/

contains the Parish records in detail!!

Ann and Sarah are diff:

death:  Ann Walker 4/3/1845 Thurcaston age 34

marriage : 17/11/1845 wid. george walker labourer  father luke walker grazier
wid. Sarah Mills  framework knitter faher william leake FWK

loads more records - might find some others in your tree.

Diddy  Grin  Grin

will also look for census 1851 with sarah as wife.

Thank you thank you.

Would you be able to check the 1871 too? Just to confirm that he had shuffled off this mortal coil by then!?

bit unsure:

there is a death possible:  george walker  sept Q 1861 leicester 7a / 147 but common name

OR 1871 census:
george walker born 1806 dalby widower living with his brother & family in Dalby (very close to Kirkby bellars)  think this could be him-would need to look for death of sarah.....

Thank you Diddy and Mike -

Think I have found a burial for George on the Villages site - it's a great site! Has him aged 69 being buried on 6th March 1876 and notes his address as Rothley Union Workhouse.

So....that 1871 census return with a George living with his brother could well be him!

Am now wondering if anyone has access to the Kirkby Bellars records and could look up George Walker's marriage to an Ann around 1832?!

Thank you for this - only slight discrepancy is that George was a butcher, not a blacksmith....

Hi again -

Have now found William and George in the 1881 census and am pretty confident that they are not who I thought they were! It has them listed as being born outside Kirkby Bellars/Thurcaston and doesn't fit with the George burial record that I found in Thurcaston.

Bummer!

Back to the drawing board - hopefully I will track him down soon!

Thanks again for all your help Grin
