Hi winnie Smiley

Do you want to find where he came from - his family, etc. or do you want to find out about Mary Batchelor and his life with in Castle Douglas or both?

So that we could help, do you have any dates for him - marriage, death and his age at these events?

Also, where he came from - I see from your earlier postings that Dunbartonshire is mentioned.

Regards

Hi gadget

I have his marriage and everything else regarding him but it seem his grandmother put him and his sister in the poorhouse because thier parents had deserted them. this was in 1899 then the father took them back in 1900
he again was sent to dumbarton poorhouse in 1907 and then sent to stay with mary batchelor I just wondered if he was classed as a servant or land worker  he only stayed there I think until 1910. then he ended in the poorhouse again I think at the time he stayed with miss Batchelor he was only 11 years old.  he was born in 1896 in Duntocher I can find his family also his marriage to my grandmother but this part of his life is a mystery.

I'm thinking that you might need local info about Mary Batchelor, then.

There is a very good Local Studies section in Castle Douglas Library. They were very helpful when I was looking for information.

Here's the link:

http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=3776

It might be worth giving them a call or writing.

School records while he was there might be worth following up as well. I'm not sure if they would have the school logs for that time but here's the Education Dept:

Hi again  Smiley

In 1901, there is a Mary Batchelor in Crossmichael, the parish just to the north of Castle Douglas*:

Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire
863 ED 1 Page 9

Anna Walker, 67, living on own means, b. England
Mary Batchelor, 45, general servant, b. Kirkcudbright

This is the only Mary Batchelor who seems to fit. She could well have moved into Castle Douglas and earned some money by taking in youngsters like your grandfather.

* Castle Douglas is in Kirkcudbrightshire not Dumfriesshire

Hi again

A little bit more on Mary Batchelor. I've got quite attached to her  Smiley

I think this might be her death:

Mary Laurie, married to Robert Laurie, ploughman. Aged 69.
25 June 1918 at the Cottage Hospital, Castle Douglas. Usual Residence: Rhonehouse.

Parents - Alexander Batchelor. Dealer, deceased and Mary, m.s. Withers

Mary married Robert Laurie on August 5th 1910 at Rhonehouse. Mary was a spinster, farm servant, aged 58 and Robert was a widower, farm worker, aged 52.

This might explain the return of Robert to the poorhouse. Do you have the date in 1910 when he returned?

Hi gadget

the only information that I have is that after he lived with her in 1907, was the record at the mitchell shows that he was removed to the Renfrewshire Combination poorhouse on 10/1/1910 from where he absconded on 24/2/1910
and was sent back again on 8/3/1910
that is all the information on the record I checked yesterday

regards
