Thomas Harney
« on: Tuesday 10 March 09 10:44 UTC (UK) »

I'm looking for any info on a policeman named Thomas M. Harney. According to the 1871 census for Abergele he was born in Wrexham in about 1850. I cannot find him in any other census pre or post 1871 or in the BMD indexes. I have been to the Denbighshire Archives at Ruthin and found him in the constabulary records but with little information about him.

I found him in the North Wales Chronicle, in reports of cases where he arrested people.
April 1871 Abergele PC Harney
May 1871 Abergele, but he is PC Harvey
July 1877 Llanwrst PC Thomas Harney.

Like you I can`t see him elsewhere, but  oddly in 1881 there is a
John Harney aged 28 labourer b Wrexham living at London Terrace Llanwrst.
Wife Emma 26 and son John 3 both b Wrexham
Daughter Maggie 3 months b Llanwrst.
RG11; Piece: 5534; Folio: 5; Page: 3

Like Thomas this  John  is proving rather elusive.  Huh

Hi wilcoxon - thanks very much for your help.

What you've found in the Chronicle does tie in with what I found in the Denbighshire Archives - that he was based in Llanrwst after working in Abergele/Pensarn. Are the North Wales Chronicle archives searchable online somewhere?

That John Harney is interesting. He's from Wrexham and living in Llanrwst too which ties in with Thomas - they could well be related. But like you say no sign of him before or after.

There is a Margaret Harney, born in Ireland, living in Wrexham in the 1871 & 1881 censuses. She was born in about 1830 and so is old enough to be Thomas' mother although she was unmarried.  Maybe she came over from Ireland with Thomas (and possibly John) sometime in the 1860s and settled in Wrexham??? Though if that was the case I don't know why they would declare themselves as being born in Wrexham.

Thanks again,
Gwyn

Thanks Wilcoxon,

She could be a relative of Thomas - I think she was the only Harney I could find in Wrexham. He definitely is a mystery - maybe her gravestone will have some clues.

Cheers,

By the way, thanks for the newspaper archives tip - I've found mentions of a handful of other relatives in there.

Hi Wilcoxon,

Thanks for the post.

Those records mention Gwynedd and Clwyd and so I think must be more modern.

These are the Denbighshire Constabulary records that I looked through (parts of them anyway) in Ruthin:-
http://arcw.llgc.org.uk/anw/get_collection.php?coll_id=2428&inst_id=29&term=denbighshire%20constabulary

They did mention Thomas Harney. I think it was the '1851-1948; description books of police officers' which came in two volumes that would have been of most use but the earlier of the two volumes wasn't in a fit enough state to be looked through unfortunately.

Thanks,
Gwyn

Thanks for taking the time to check.

I suppose another possibility is that he went on to work for Caernarvonshire police. I will check the archives next time I'm in Caernarfon but I think it's that off-limits volume in Ruthin that would give a lot of his biog.

Cheers,
Gwyn
