Hi, Looking for information on John Baraclough b.(1801) was living in Abbey St, Nuneaton in 1851. There was a Baraclough's Circulating Library in Nuneaton in c 1800, so it must of been a family business. John Baraclough was a printer and bookseller. Kind Regards Irene

Hi Irene,
I just thought I'd have a go at your posting as no one else has.
John appears to have a new wife by 1861 and young children.
Do you have this info?
Circulating libraries brought reading to the masses and were at first mostly for the middle classes as there was a yearly fee. Books were expensive in the 1800's and not available to all. They were the forerunners of our Public Libraries. John Barraclough probably ran the Nuneaton one as did many other men in different towns.

In case you haven't seen his baptism, from IGI John Barraclough, 6 Jan 1802, Nuneaton, Warwickshire parents John Barraclough & Ann. What is the link to Derbyshire, did they move there in later years?

Hi,
A little more info re a John Baraclough & Nuneaton. This is taken from:-
Jackson's Oxford Journal Saturday, August 20 1831 Issue 4086
"At the Warwick Assizers Thomas Morris was charged with stealing a mare, belonging to Thomas Coulston. The prosecutor, a farmer, lives at Castlemorton, in the County of Worcester. On the 28th June he had a brown mare, which he turned upon Castlemorton Common. He missed her the next day, but afterwards, in consequence of information he had received, he went to Nuneaton, and found her in the possession of JOHN BARACLOUGH, who keeps the Old Crown, with whom the prisoner had swapped her for another horse. The prisoner was seen by several persons with the mare in his possession. He was found guilty, and sentence of death was recorded against him. Morris has long been known to the Worcester Police. It is supposed that he has engaged in several robberies."
I CAN CONFIRM THAT THE NEWSPAPER STATES JOHN BARACLOUGH, AS BEING AT THE OLD CROWN, HOWEVER THE VICTUALLERS DATABASE RECORD - WARWICKSHIRE WEB STATES THERE WAS A JOSEPH BARACLOUGH AT THE OLD CROWN.
