Just wondering if anyone would be able to help, I am have difficulties in researching an ancestor from kilkenny. All I know is the following - which was from her marriage certificate in Australia 1879.
Name: O'KEEFFE, Margaret
Born: 1858 - (according to marriage certificate)
Farther: O'KEEFFE, Martin (Occu:- farmer)
Mother: MURPHY, Margaret
Nothing further is known about her parents and wether she had sibblings, none of them came to Australia if she did.
It is uncertain what town they were from. At the age of 20 in 1874 - Margaret mirgrated to Australia aboard the Darling-Downs.
I know - I don't have much to go on here, but every bit helps.

Civil registration for births began in 1864 so you will need to search parish records.
do you know the family's religion, and the parish or townland they were from ?
Parish records are available on microfilm in some LDS centres to order.
The Irish Family History Foundation (www.irish-roots.ie) includes transcripts for Co. Kilkenny - the index search is free when you register, but viewing each record detail costs €5.

You would normally need to know the religion and parish to be able to start ordering microfilm records - as Catholic and Church of Ireland records can have different parish area, and availability.
there are two baptism records in the IFHF site that I see where the father's name is Martin :
Keeffe Margaret 1854 Co. Kilkenny
Keefe Margaret 1861 Co. Kilkenny
I'll see if I can figure out the parishes for these...

both the Baptisms are in the RC parish of Danesfort, the major town in that area is Bennettsbridge

Working back from the birth of Margaret there are couple of possible matches for a marriage of Martin e.g. :
Keefe Martin 1852 Co. Kilkenny
Keeffe Martin 1854 Co. Kilkenny
again without the O' prefix... but I cannot tie any of these to a corresponding Margaret Murphy.
