My Great Grandfather George Dunford was born about 1856 in  Toller Porcorum Dorset. I am having a real job finding his family as it is sometimes mentioned he was born in Dollar Dorset! and Great Toller! I know his Father's name was John and that is all I know, it would be a great help to find his family in one of the censuses. He did move to Southampton at some stage but not sure how old he was!!  Hope someone is able to help.

Have you been into www.dorsetopc.com and done a 'site search'.  The Dunfords are prominent at Toller Porcoram and I found John in the 1941 Census aged 8.  He could be a match but many other villages on the site search tool.

Hope you find him

Hi Roz, I have had a look on the Dorset OPC but as you say the Dunfords are very prominent and I do believe there were a few George Dunford's about at the time.  I will have another search though, he seems to be hiding from me at the moment!!

Many Thanks

Not quite the same generation but I have a John Dunford married to Hannah Rolls in 1825 in Toller Fratrum. This John Dunford was born in Chilfrome.  Don't know whether this links with your Dunford family.

I think Great Toller is another name for Toller Porcorum.

Looks like your George Dunford was in Hampshire for the 1861 census.  I haven't access to the full details but a George Dunford(c1855) born Toller with father John born c1832 is found there.  As well as George Dunford  (1855) there was a Ezekiel Dunford (1857), Lucy Dunford (1852) and Susan Dunford (1833) all born in Toller but living in Hampshire at the time of the 1861 census. This looks like a family unit with a mother called Susan.

A marriage takes place in Dorchester District Dec 1851 of a John Dunford and Susan Laver.  In Toller Porcorum (1841) there is a Susan Laver of the right age.

1871 in Charmister there is a family unit of

Susan Dunford Head widow 33 Toller
Ellen Dunford dau 11 Hants, Burton
Lucy Dunford dau 9 Waterloo
Frances Dunford dau 7 Toller
Ezekiel Dunford son 13 Toller
Frederick Dunford son 5 Toller
William Dunford son 3 Toller

Death of a John Dunford age 38 in Mar 1870 Dorchester District fits the age of the John Dunford resident in Hampshire in 1861.  Your George Dunford appears to be resident elsewhere.

Hope this helps

Hi , Many thanks for the e mail, I belive you are correct with the information you have e mailed me. It's brilliant! been tracking George Dunford for years without much luck. I have also found him in the 1871 Census and he seemed to be working in a public house in Beaminster!

Really appreciated
