I have several relatives that died in Torphichen between 1900 and 1954 - where would they have been buried locally ? Any ideas as I am visiting there in the next few weeks and would love to track the headstones down as I have all their family history in place now.
Many thanks

Many thanks Jean,
It is a great little web site and I have already traced some relatives in the old grave yard in Torphichen from their work.
So I will drop them an e mail
Cheers Dermot

The cemetery, as distinct from churchyard, for Torphichen Parish was, and still is, Woodbank Cemetery which was opened in 1899 when a 15 month-old Mabel Ross of Bridgecastle, having died of congestion of the lungs, was interred on 4th November at 3.30pm. She was buried in the private lair B314 at a depth of 6 feet.
Source? West Lothian Family History Society Burial Register CD for Fauldhouse, Linlithgow, Livingston, Whitburn and Woodbank; the last transcribed by me. If you go to their website - www.wlfhs.org.uk - you'll find you can access an index to the CD online. There are also indexes to the 1851 and 1901 West Lothian Censuses and all three will be available for the duration of Homecoming2009.
Have a look in the index for Woodbank and if you find what you're looking for post the names back here and I'll look up the full details for you.
Good hunting!

Hi wdermot and mr-aitch
I've hadn't realised the West Lothian Family History Society were providing the free indexes, I'll need to spread that about! I know they do a great job providing free family history sessions at Blackburn Library - allowing free access to the Scotland's People site and roadshows going to other libraries for people who cannot get to Blackburn.
I'm just sorry that all my Scottish ancestors were from Dumfries as I live in West Lothian - about 5 mins from the local archives! In saying that my great granfather and his family were living in Edinburgh in the late 19th and early 20th century so I still hold out some hope of having some lost West Lothian cousins.

Hi I have managed to find three relatives from 1905 -1913 buried in the Torphichen graveyard. However teh folloing names are not, each having died 1953/54 . They are Mary Ann Lawson and Helen(Ellen) Lawson. They are not registered in the societies web site search. Therefore does anyone have any clues as to where they could have been buried in the locale at that time. Many thanks

Jean Hi, Jean
You see, if you had read my post on 7th February - West Lothian Homecoming 2009 - you would have known about the indexes ;-)
You sound as though you've attended one of our Workshops or Roadshows. I'm the one who does the introductory talk on getting started.
Our next Roadshow is to the Lanthorn Library in Livingston on 4th April.
At only 5 minutes from the Local History Library you're nearer than I am :-)
And please don't be apologising for Dumfries ancestors; that's where my male line comes from - Moffat :-)
Cheers,
mr-aitch

Hi, Dermot. How did I know you are interested in Lawsons?
It helps to remember that there are two distinct burying grounds in Tprphichen Parish - the churchyard at the church in Torphichen village and the cemetery at Woodbank a few miles away. The three relatives you found in the index are buried at Woodbank. The detailed records are:
Joseph Lawson, aged 76 years, died 20Jan1905 at Westfield; interred in LairA112 at 3pm on 23Jan1905 at 6ft depth
Maria Lawson, aged 61 years, died 8Mar1909 at Westfield; interred in Lair A112 at 3pm on 11Mar1909 at 6ft depth (sic)
Catherine Lawson, aged 49 years, died 22Apr1913 at Edinburgh; interred in lair A112 at 3pm on 24Apr1913 at 5ft depth
You didn't find the two others because I've not yet finished the transcription and the index only covers up to 1945. But the two ladies are there:
Ellen Lawson, aged 79 years, died 25Oct1953 at Westfield; interred in LairA112 at 10am on 27Oct1953 at 5ft depth (sic)
Mary Ann Lawson, aged 85 years, died 24May1954 at Westfield,; interred in Lair A112 at 10am on 26May1954 at 4ft depth
I'm intrigued as to how the gravediggers got two coffins in at 6ft, two more at 5ft and yet another two at 4ft! (see next) Unless they were following the Irish custom of jumping into the lair and tramping down the remains to make space for the new one. According to my Irish relatives, that is.
Robina Lawson, aged 78 years, died 19Feb1971 at Montrose; interred in Lair A112 at 10am on 23Feb1971 at 4ft depth
These Lawsons are also buried at Woodbank:
William Lawson, aged 73 years, died 17Oct1974 at Bathgate; interred in Lair B137 on 19Oct1974 at 6ft depth
Lawrence Lawson, aged 80 years, died 7Mar1963 at Aberdeen; interred in Lair D6 at 3pm on 11Mar1963 at 5ft depth
Hope these are of some help.
Just out of curiosity, which names did you find in the Torphichen churchyard?
Good hunting.
mr-aitch

Hi mr-aitch
I'm suprised I didn't notice your post - I like to nosy into anything re West Lothian. Only joking about Dumfries ancestors - I think the family history society there do a great job as well, just a bit miffed at living so near archives when my ancestors did not come from this area! . My ancestors are also from Moffat - named Blyth - not a lost cousin are you?
I have been to one of your workshops, I'm also a library buddy at the local library, so I tell anyone interested in family history about your good work.
Hope you don't mind me hi-jacking your thread a bit dermot
Jean
