Completed - Hesket in the Forest
« on: Friday 13 March 09 06:17 UTC (UK) »

Could I have some clarification please.  Have Joseph LONGRIGG shown on 1891 Census as born in Hesket in the Forest.

On the 1881 Census he shown as born Barrow Ling Hesket in the Forest.

Am I right in thinking that Barrow Ling is the name of the farm of 70 acres he is farming, and Hesket in the Forest in the village and/or town?

In 1871 there was Southwaite Hill, then tally Ho, then tally ho vicarage then Barrow Ling. I think its the name of the farm. if you put it into google there is still a Barrow Ling farm, Southwaite, carlisle, they ahd foot and mouth in 2001

Hi,

In Mannix & Whellan's 1847 History, Gazetteer and Directory of Cumberland the parish of Hesket-in-the-Forest is described as follows:

" Extends about 10 miles in length, and five in breadth, and is intersected by the high road from Penrith to Carlisle, the Lancaster and Carlisle railway, and the river Petteril; and contains the five townships of High and Low Hesket, Itonfield, Petteril Crooks, Plumpton-Street, and Calthwaite."

In this directory there is a John Longrigg who is a yeoman farmer and living at Low Hesket. It doesn't give the name of the farm. Some house/property names are listed but I can't see any that are mentioned in your post.
