Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone knows anything further about this church.
I have one ancestor baptised here but I can't find any other members of their family there; I managed to get the following from LDS:
History— In 1751, the Earl of Eglinton as patron presented the Rev. Charles Bannatyne of Kilmory, in Arran, to the church and parish of Irvine, then vacant. The presentee was inducted to his charge in direct opposition to the strongly expressed feelings of a large portion of his parishioners against him. Application was made to the Relief Presbytery for supply of sermon. A petition was presented to the Relief Presbytery of Glasgow, on the 18th of August 1773, and a place of worship was built. Source: Annals and Statistics of the United Presbyterian Church, by Rev. William MacKelvie, D.D., pub. 1873. Film #477618. More details may be given in the source, including a list of ministers.
Records— Family History Library Film Number Baptisms 1778–1790, 1807–1877 0889478 item 3–4 X Marriages 1777–1877 0889478 item 3–4 X Session Minutes 1777–1877 0889478 item 3–4 Note: The X means the records have been extracted.
Am I correct in saying that the relief church was formed because many locals objected to the Rev Bannatyne, and not because of any real difference in religious opinion with the established church? Was also wondering whether anyone knew why there is a gap in baptisms between 1790 and 1807 in their records, and how I might go about consulting the session minutes to fill in that gap.
So confused

The Relief Church was one of several new denominations that split off from the Established Church of Scotland in the 18th century. The key issue here was whether the congregation should have the right to choose its minister or whether the minister should be selected by a patron - often the Crown, the local laird or noble. Patronage had been abolished in 1690 when the Presbyterian form of church government was restored but after the Act of Union, the Westminster Parliament reinstated patronage - to please Scottish landowners. This was bitterly resented by many people in Scotland and often led to people leaving the church when a new minister was presented by the patron. This may have been done as a matter of principal or because the people did not approve of the minister presented by the patron. Certainly there was no major theological difference involved although over the years these new churches developed differences in style and practice.
I don't know anything about this particular church but the reason for the gap in the baptismal records could be something as simple as somebody loosing them or they were destroyed by fire or flood. I doubt whether the Session records would contain duplicate details of baptisms but if they exist they will be in the National Archives of Scotland, in Edinburgh. You can consult their on-line catelogue to see if they still exist.

Hi Jessie,
Many thanks for your reply and explanation. It makes a lot more sense to me now, I had no idea it was to do with the Act of Union so that's interesting information.
As regards the kirk session minutes, the LDS entry appears to show they have them on microfilm? So if I can't get them in NAS I should be able to get them in an LDS library. Even if they don't have any baptisms, it still might be useful to have a look at whats in there.
Again, many thanks, Lauren
