Primitive Methodist Missionaries in West Africa
« on: Wednesday 16 February 05 12:38 GMT (UK) »

I don't know if this is the right page to put this query but it is the nearest that I can find.

Some Ancestors of mine were Primitive Methodist Missionaries in West Africa during the 1880’s and up to about 1913.  I would really like to find out more about their work in Africa.

There names were Annie (Nancy) and Jabez Bell. They actually got married in Fernando Po about 1888.  Annie’s maiden name was Smedley. I attach their Wedding Photograph.

Could anyone  tell me any way how I could obtain a record of their marriage?  Also of their missionary work. Nancy also had a child/children that I believe died and was/were buried in Africa.

If anyone can help me in my research it would be really appreciated.

many thanks,

Andy

Hi Andy,
Sorry i cant help you on this one - have searched and done my best without success. What about the missionary society themselves, perhaps they have some info on the family.
good luck

Many thanks for looking for me Ruth.

I have got as much information form the family as I can including the photograph and details above, but little else.

Hope to go to London one day to see if I can find out more via the Archives, Manuscripts and Rare Books Division, Library, School of Oriental & African Studies, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London WC1H 0XG. They have microfiche of Primitive Methodist correspondence in Fernando Po from 1894-1933, and there is a possibility that Rev Bell is mentioned in there as according to their database he was in that region until 1913.  So if anyone just happens to be there . . . . .

If anyone else comes across anything that would add to the story it would be appreciated.

Andy

It may be worth contacting the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel - e-mail very helpful Catherine Wakeling on  catherine[AT]uspg.org.uk  who may know whether the Primitive Methodists have a society of their own still in existence or give you other advice.

You could try the Mundus gateway (Google 'Mundus' should get you there)- do a search on 'primitive methodists' and it will give you the details of where records are held. The School of African and Oriental Studies in London (SOAS) has  a lot of missionary archives and may be able to help further.

I have just received the following information on the marriage of Nancy and Jabez:

They were married in Calabar, Nigeria. The child who died was a girl caled Dorothy, the same name as their next daughter. She was on a boat called Cabenda.

If any one can add to this information I would really appreciate it.
