Owen(s)

Can anyone help?
The 1881 Census shows the following
William Owen Head 58 Great Gidding, Hunts Ann Owen Wife 56 Wadenhoe, Northants Fredrick Owen Son 22 Great Gidding, Hunts Lewis J Owen Son 14 Great Gidding, Hunts George W Owen G'son 9 Great Gidding, Hunts William G Owen G'son 6 Ashton, Northants
My relative in William G the grandson. We have searched 1837online as well as the actual books before that for Williams birth but can not find it.
There is however a George W being registered in the Oundle district in 1874.Could this possibly be him? If so why would he have been registered with his brothers name?
We are interested to find this birth as it seems that he lives permanently with his grandparents and we would like to know what happened to his mother.
Any help would be appreciated.

I think these could be William's parents living in Ashton in 1871:
George OWEN, 21, head, mar, shepherd, born Hunts Gt Gidding Lucy OWEN, 22, wife, mar, born Northants Peterborough.
RG10/1511 folio 40 pg 23

Hmm, George & Lucy are still alive and living in Warmington in 1881 with several children. There goes my theory out the window I suppose

No the person whose birth i'm looking for was definately William George Owen, his marriage certificate in 1899 to Eliza Elizabeth Norman says that that is how he signed his name. His father is still alive and his name is William.
Is there any way that the registrar would have written it down wrong?

It is possible that the 2 boys were William George and George William and for some reason they were both known by their middle names. Perhaps the registrar did get it wrong in the way that names are sometimes given in reverse ie William George Owen could have been given as Owen, George William etc
One of my gt gt grandfather's sisters was registered as Frances Maria but appears on every census as Maria Frances
Still, £7 is a lot to waste on the wrong certificate
Hope that hasn't confused things
