Do any of you know of any hosiery mills around St Albans 1907-1932 and if so a manager named Arthur Edward Matthews.  Thank you.  Janney65.

Welcome!

I hope that you will visit often and make lots of progress.  Please be sure to register your names on our SURNAME INTERESTS TABLE.

Although I went to school in St Albans I wasn't born there, and the only hosiery factory/mill that I can remember was the "ballito" (I think that was how it was spelt) factory on the Hatfield Road.  I have checked Chris Reynolds' Genealogy in Hertfordshire site but nothing for hosiey mills unfortunately. Sad  Perhaps a St Albans resident will be able to assist you.

Here's hoping!

Many thanks for trying to help.  On mothers marriage certificate it states that her father was Arthur Edward Matthews, manager of hosiery mill, my mother margaret matthews born St Albans 1907 she married my father in 1933 in Gainsborough. I cannot find birth for her so cannot send for birth certificate.

Once again thank you

Good morning Janney65,

Like Rick I am not from St Albans but  the hosiey mills were the Ballito, Fleetville St Albans. The sight is now a Morrrisons. As kids we used to travel to St Albans by bus ( in the days when we had buses) and get off at the Ballito.

Anyway if you google Ballito hosiery factory there are various refs to the factory. You might find something of interest

Hope this helps   Margaret

Hi Janney

Have you managed to find your mother on the 1911 census?  I cannot find her in Herts at this time.  Like you I am unable to find a birth in St Albans Registration District circa 1907 for her.  Is it possible that she may have been born elsewhere?

Hello rick

Thank you for taking a look at Hertfordshire for me. I have been looking for years now but so far no luck.  I have mothers marriage certificate and death certificate and it states that she was born St Albans and her fathers name was Arthur Edward Matthews,  manager at hosiery mill.  Do not know her mothers name as mother never spoke about her family, do not know if she had brothers or sisters.  I do not know where to look next.

Thank you once again

Janney

I think that the fact that your mother does not appear to be in Herts in 1911 and that there is no sign of a birth for her in St Albans RD circa 1907 on the GRO indexes is telling.  I wonder if one of the following explanations would account for this.

1. She was not born circa 1907.  It is not unusual for ladies in particular to knock a few years off of their ages.  My own grandmother took off 7 years from her actual birthyear!  I would suggest extending GRO searches to at least 10 years either side of 1907, though she is much more likely to be older than you expect and not younger, though of course this is possible.

2.  She was not registered as MATTHEWS.  Perhaps her parents married after she was born.  As you don't know her mother's maiden name this could be problematic, particularly if she is also listed under this name on the 1911 census.

3.  She was mistaken about her birthplace.  This is not that unusual.  For example, if someone spent the early part of their life in a particular place it would not be unnatural for them to assume that they had been born there.  However, they may have been born elsewhere and brought to that location as a baby.  I would suggest widening the search area for her birth.  Perhaps investigating other Herts and North London areas for Margaret MATTHEWS born around the right time in the GRO indexes.  When you go to order certificates, state that the father's name much be Arthur.  The GRO will then not issue the certificate if this is not the case and will refund part of the fee.

Hello rick

Once again thank you, this is the reason i have been trying to find my mother through her father, i thought if i could find him, i would find her, how many managers of hosiery mills/factories with that name could there be.

I will continue looking else where as you suggested, many thanks again.  If in the future i do find my mother and her family i will be back in touch, once again, thank you.

Kind regards

janney.
