FICKUS family
« on: Friday 13 March 09 20:39 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I am reseaching my grandmother's maiden name FICKUS, and have found ancestors in Dorset.  I have traced back to a John Hurred Fickus (BORN 1807), but I am not sure whether he was from Dorset as Census records state that he was born in Steyning West Sussex, but christening records suggest he was christened in Salisbury, Wiltshire but I seem to be coming up with residency details in Dorset.  Is anyone researching the same family tree and if so can you help me?

Tracey

Hi, Tracey

I've got a Sarah Fickus (born c. 1797 in Somersetshire) who married Daniel Burr Garling in 1830 and in the marriage notice her father was the late Lieutenant Fickus of the Somerset Militia. I've just started looking into him so I've only got scraps.

He's listed as being the John Fickus, Quartermaster in the 2nd Somerset Militia, in army lists. And in a subscriber list for a book on the history of Taunton, Somersetshire, he's living in Bath.

On the UK National Archives site, the Somerset Archive and Record Service holds a copy of probate for John Hurad Fickus of Walcot, lieutenant and quartermaster in 2nd Somerset Militia, pr.1825. The Hurad is why your posting caught my eye.

So your John Hurred Fickus might be some kind of relative of these Fickuses.

Hi, again.

I think now that your John Hurred Fickus is the son of my John Hurred Fickus. I found the following from the Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle etc (Portsmouth, England), Monday, November 30, 1807

Southampton.
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 28.
...Monday and Tuesday the second battalion of the Somerset Militia marched through this town on their route to Salisbury.

That would explain why John Hurred Fickus jun. was born in one county and baptised in another.

regards
