In the spring of 1858, Henry Corben of Worth Matravers married Jane Bower of Acton, Langton Matravers. They wed at St Mary's Church, Wareham rather than either of the churches in their adjoining villages.
I've always found this rather odd; does anyone think there is an explanation? Was there no incumbent Vicar at either of the churches so they had to travel to Wareham?

What were the occupations of the bride and groom? Might this account for them being in a place other than where you thought they'd be?

Hi,
The Worth Matravers page on www.opcdorset.com refers to the church being restored in 1869 so perhaps it was out of use in 1858.

Was the marriage by licence?
Reasons for marrying outside the village of residence include:
Avoiding the population of the village.
Family tradition.
A prettier church or more suitable for the number of guests.
The village church being under repair.

Thanks Charlotte; Henry was a quarryman. later a stonemason and Jane was a spinster.
The marriage was by licence, David...........certainly the church at Wareham is prettier and now has a fine hotel/restaurant alongside in the old priory but which would not have been available to them in 1858 for a reception!
