Ballymurray/Bogginfin - Cemetery nearby
« on: Saturday 14 March 09 14:49 UTC (UK) »

Hi everyone,
I just received today my GGrandfather's and GGrandmother's death certificate.  I knew they lived in Ballymurray.  But on the death certificate it mentions that they died in Bogginfin.  I cannot locate this town on a map.  Would anyone know where this is in Roscommon?  And if there is a cemetery near by where they might be buried?  My GGrandfather is Thomas Murtagh (ex RIC) was married to Ellen Brennan.  Ellen's father is Luke Brennan (farmer in Carrigeens, Kilmeane, Athlone.  There was an informant for them who was their nephew - Stephen Naughtin/Naughton.  Any help would be much appreciated.

If you go to www.seanruad.com and put in 'bogg' (townland) & 'Roscommon' (county) then change default setting from exact match to beginning of word you'll find details of town and townlands called Bogginfin.

The nearest Cemetery is in Mote Demesne townland.
Visit
http://www.roscommoncoco.ie/burialgrounds/ShowRecord.aspx?Record=162
.
Bogganfin, Ballymurray and Mote Demesne townlands all adjoin and are all in Kilmeane Civil parish.
See the readily available (worldwide) Ordnance Survey Discovery Series map number 40, grid reference 910 619.
.
The Catholic parish is Knockcrogherty whick includes Killinvoy, Kilmeane, Rahara.
Catholic records for 1841 - 1881 are on LDS film 989752'

The LDS British Isles Vital Records set of 16 CDs has records for Killinvoy & Killmain (Christening) 1841-1881 - (Marriage) 1841-1881
.
For change of occupiers of land 1854-1920 see LDS film 868118.

For further details check your local library for the "not for profit" Resource County Roscommon 2009 CD.

Thank you ever so much.  I believe I did rent out the Kilmeane film #989752.  Which was unsuccessful for Murtagh and Brennan.  Which I found kinda odd.  My great aunt was married in that church, so I expected to find them.
But the other suggestions.....I am definitely going to check out.  I really do find researching in Ireland a challenge.
I had a person answer one of my rootsweb postings ( I was never notified ) when I discovered it, it said he had pictures of my relatives. .that I should contact him.  And he wished me a Merry Christmas.  Then when I sent out the reply (which was 6 months later, since I wasn't aware of the e-mail), the address was no longer active.
I was tempted to put an ad in a local paper to locate the gentleman, but didn't know what newspaper would be the best.
Thank you again!

If you are thinking of a newspaper and you think the gentlemen was from Roscommon then either the Roscommon Champion would be the best paper to go with.

On the 1901 Roscommon Census it looks like Stephen Naughton is alive and living with wife Anne and Son Edward.

Try the Griffths valuation website, you can search by place name and it gives you a map of the area back then and now

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doPlaceSearch&freetext=ballymurray&countyname=ROSCOMMON&baronyname=&unionname=&parishname=&Submit.x=69&Submit.y=5

Thank you ever so much for your help and suggestions.
Maybe it is the Naughton family that has pictures of my family.  I will have to look up and see if there are any Naughtons in the area now.
Thank you again!
