Levin - Henry Playford
« on: Sunday 04 October 09 01:32 UTC (UK) »

I'm interested in information regarding Henry Playford who died 24/05/1936 and bequeathed his land to the Borough of Levin.  I believe he may be the brother of my G-Grandfather.  The last record I have of my Henry is in Leongatha, Victoria, Australia in 1903 but was told by an older family member that he went to New Zealand.  Can anyone point me in the right direction of how I access NZ Census and Immigration records, or where I would access a copy of an obituary (if one exists).

Census information was never kept.
NZ was still considered “British” until 1955, so there would be no Immigration records as such.

ggogle maps shows there is a PLAYFORD Park in Levin:

The cemetery is to the left at the corner of Mako Mako & Tiro Tiro Roads.

Might be worth contacting the Horowhenua District Council to see if they can tell you more about the origin of Playford Park:

unusual name, so checked "up the road" at Palmerston North and there a couple of burials there which may be of interest:

Hi Karie

All the Electoral Rolls are available on fiche (usually at Public Libraries) but they aren't indexed, with the exception of 1881 & 1893.

Hi Karie

Henry Playford Probate
Farmer of Levin
Will dated 22 Jul 1930
died 24 May 1936 at Levin

20 acres, 14 perches of land to Borough of Levin under lease in perpetuity for a camping ground.
Mention of the Palmerston North Hospital Board....

As the Horowhenua Public Hospital (now the Horowhenua Health Centre) is quite close to Playford Park (on the south side of Liverpool St), I wonder if this was part of the original 20 acres........
Perhaps something else you could ask the District Council.
