John Douglas 1830 Distington: COMPLETED

hello all

only my 2nd post so hope this is in order

I am looking for my paternal  Grandfather John Douglas born in Distington,  Cumberland abt 1830. He was living in Distington for 1841 and 1851 census' with a Sarah Cape and Simon and Nancy Douglas. I am unsure if these two were his siblings? I cannot find birth info or parents info and wonder if anyone local is able to help?

His baptism appears in the IGI
Baptism at Distington 19 July 1829, son of Thomas and Jane
also 31 July 1831 Nancy (who was with him in 1851)
and 6 Oct 1833 Thomas

There was a marriage at Distington 9 April 1806, Henry CAPE to a Sarah DOUGLAS, so it seems she certainly was a relative.

Thank you so much and as an absolute novice could you tell me what the 'IGI' is please and it is something I could access?

John disappears (at least from my view) in 1861; judging by what my Dad has said and seeing a ten year gap in bewteen his older two children and the rest i feel his first wife may have died and he then later re-married to Mary but iI can't find anything on this

Hi and welcome to rootschat.  The IGI (International geneaolgical index) is available free for all on www.familysearch.org , as is the 1881 census.  It lists many baptisms and marriages - not all but if you are lucky your particular parish may be covered.   Extracted records are generally accurate.  Submitted ones are put on by an LDS church member and may be OK but you do have to check them as some are just guesswork.
You can look at Freebmd.org.uk for post 1837 births etc.  Again it is not full coverage but getting there and many records are ont it.
If you look at the various tips on the Beginners' board you should find other free sites that we all use.

One of the children - Thomas 4 - was boarding in 1861, suggesting that his mother may have died.  He was bap at Distington in 1856 where his mother was named as Catherine.

Deaths Mar 1858
DOUGLAS    Catharine         Cockermouth    10b   344

There was a possible marriage at Carlisle in 1853 to Catherine CALLAGHAN but the ages were not quite right. (see the IGI again)
