Shipping help please *COMPLETED*
« on: Monday 16 March 09 06:37 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

My ggrandparents left the UK on The Fitzjames leaving 24 January 1866, but a few days out the ship sprung a leak and the ship was declared unseaworthy on arrival in Portugal 14 February 1866.    Repairs to the ship was obviously done as they finally arrived in Melbourne, Australia in July.

What would the passengers have done in the interim while the ship was being repaired, did they stay on board, have accommodation provided, did they go back to the UK.. or was it a very very slow trip to Australia?

The information I have found on the web about the ship just mentions the leak and the arrival and the final fate of the ship years later.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers
