Gypsy Names
« on: Monday 16 March 09 09:48 UTC (UK) »

I was wondering if anyone can tell me is McCallum, McArthur, or Clark a gypsy surname?

I have been told my great grandmother Mary McCallum had some gypsy origins.  She married in 1873 at the age of 24 in Glasgow.   I was told she was born in Mull in 1849.  The above names are connected to her.  Her father Hugh was a farm servant.

Clark? Blimey, yeah! " 1599 to the present. " Found all over the country too. 1599? That's a pedigree, isn't it?

Must say; This book's murder! I bought it on a whim. Now it's on and off that shelf several times a week. I see a name and I can't help but have a look  Wink

It's Not 100% exhaustive though. I've personally seen surnames listed as " Travelling Gypsys. Caravans at so and so. " on census's and the name isn't in there. Not many. But it's happened.

Frankly, that amazes me. Because he's been so thorough in every other way. I guess the guy's as human as the rest of us, at the end of the day  Smiley

Steve, I've got the book, I rarely put it down   Grin  I was intrigued by names in our family like Fairnetty, Gentila, and Ocean. (Etc). Robert never seems to cover my own Romany family tho  Cry  we're the Roberts, who married into the Ripley's, Clark's and Wilson's amongst others.  If youre on Facebook, add Robert, I have lol.

Is he on that? Good lord. 'Mind you; One thing I have noticed about that abomination is that some cool people have cool sites on it. " Show Of Hands " are on there!  Grin

Naah. I have a need to tell various people about my own doings. I considered all those types of sites. Started a Blog instead, in the end. Saves me repeating the same news to a dozen individuals. Get less din's wanting me to be their " Friends " too.

Not to my tastes, things like that  Lips Sealed

Grin  he he.  I like it for the photo albums, I can upload my thousands of photos of my three little darlings on there.  You know what they say, there's only one thing more boring than listening to other peoples dreams - and thats looking at photos of other people's babies.   LOLOL!
