Horsham Baptism ca 1600
« on: Monday 16 March 09 21:05 UTC (UK) »

I am seeking the baptism of William THOMAS circa 1600, possibly in Horsham or Southwick.  His father died when William was an infant and his mother remarried in Horsham in 1603 to Richard WELLER, and they settled in Frant.  William's baptism is not on IGI.
Thanks for any help, Samueller.

My cousin and I are direct descendants of Agnes.  We would like to know more about William Thomas.

We would like to know the names of Agnes' parents and the name of Richard Weller's first wife before Agnes.

My cousin has a copy of both the wills of Richard and Agnes.

'Esando,' I was delighted to see your message.

I am not myself related to this WELLER family.

Richard WELLER of Horsham and Frant who married Agnes THOMAS has often been confused with another Richard whose wife was Susan, and who came to Frant and Tonbridge from Cranbrook, Kent.  In fact Richard of Horsham and Agnes are erroneously named on a large memorial in Tonbridge Parish Church.  It so happens that there's an article on the subject in the June 2009 issue of Family Tree Magazine (if you are in UK.  If not, I will send you a scanned copy of the article.)

Like you, I would like to know more about William THOMAS.  Also the names of Agnes's parents.  Some sources suggest that her maiden name was TURNER, and the Sussex Marriage Index has her with that surname when she married Richard in 1603.

Richard's first wife may have been Anne, as there was a burial at Horsham on 3 May 1603 of Anne WELLER.

I also have the wills of Richard and Agnes (and of the other Richard.)
A descendant of Richard and Agnes, Brad Card of Washington State, and I have been researching for many months.

Samueller.

Thank you,  'Samueller' for posting back so soon.  I'm a cousin of Brad Card of Washington State and he & his wife and my husband & I are all friends.  They get down here to So. Cal. about twice a year and we see them.  It sounds like you and Brad have about the same information and the same questions needing to be answered.  Basically, I've received all of the Card line of the family information from Brad since I never met my Grandfather as he died before I was born.

Brad's father and my Grandfather's mother were brother and sister.  She was the eldest of the 14 children and Brad's father was one of the youngest.

So, thank you very much for posting back and telling me what you know.   I'll relay the info to my cousin Brad and I didn't realize that you knew him!

Thanks a lot,

Edie,

Thanks for the reply.  Brad and I have shared our research findings.  Well, he's done most of the research and I have sometimes commented and made suggestions.  He can give you my email address if you wish to contact me direct (as addresses are sensibly not permitted on RootsChat.)
