helen jack - birth certificate
« on: Monday 16 March 09 23:07 UTC (UK) »

I am having trouble finding the birth cert of my ggrandmother in Dundee. My grandmother was Isabella Bain and I believe her parents were Helen (Ellen) Jack and Murdo Bain. I can only find 1 marriage cert for those names and Helen's parents were named as John Jack and Mary Cameron. (Found their marriage cert).
However, Helen's death cert in 1944 has her as Helen Walker Jack and her mother as Lily Jack. The informant is Isabella Cable, which is the married name of my grandmother. Can there be 2 Helen Jacks in Dundee who both married Murdo Bains?Huh? And could they both have daughters with the name Isabella.... Help!!

Hi

The IGI has the following birth

Helen Walker JACK, born Dundee 13th May 1860, mother Lily JACK, no father named.

The source of this entry is the Statutory Register and you can download a copy of the certificate from Scotlandspeople but the entry suggests that Helen was illegitimate.

Thanks Andy. I had found her - the entire family of Lily plus children ended up in the poorhouse - which is why certain memebers of the family hold to there being another Helen/Ellen Jack!! The problem is that there appears to be no sign of Helen Jack who apparently married Murdo Bain and has parents who aren't Lily! I think it's way too late and I need to sleep on this.
