Margaret HAMILTON b. abt 1832 Down or Antrim ? d. Oct 1886 Ballarat East, Victoria, Aust.
Death Reg# 11639/1886 McCoubrie Margaret age 54 - parents James HAMILTON & Ellen NEWELL - Ballarat East
Margaret McCoubrie, a widow aged 54 was buried in the Ballarat New Cemetery 11 October 1886 last address Glen Park, Bungaree. Presb Section 12 Grave 24. She is in the same grave as James McCoubrie aged 19 buried 17 February 1872.
Marriage Miss Margaret HAMILTON Magheradrool daughter of James Hamilton aged 20 married John McCoubrie 21 Jan 1853
McCoubrie John 1853 Parish: MAGHERADROOL (PR)
Only child found so far:
James b. abt 1853 Belfast (according to death reg) d. 1872 Ballarat, Victoria, Aust.
James' last address Lyons Street Ballarat. Occupation Draper.
Death Reg# 287 Surname: MCCOUBRIE Given Names: James Event: Death Father: John Alexander Mother: Margaret Age: 19 Sex: Male Birth Place: BELFAST Death Place: BALLARAT Year: 1872 Reg Number: 287
This is the only one that seems to match:
Church Baptism McCoubrie James 1853 Co. Antrim McCoubrie James 1853 Parish: ST ANNE'S, SHANKILL (CI) However it gives 'no match' if I enter any of the following for father's name: John, Jo, Alex, Alexr, Alexander so it may not be the one.
I can't find a birth in Ireland or a death in Ireland or Australia for spouse John (middle name possibly Alexander) McCOUBRIE (yes I know there are many variations of this family name), nor can I find a shipping record for the family except for this possible one:
Index to Unassisted Inward Passenger Lists to Victoria 1852-1923 Family First Name Age Month Year Ship Port Fiche Page NOV 1863 COMMODORE PERRY B 226 006 MCCOMBRIE JAMES 9 MCCOMBRIE LINDEN 7 MCCOMBRIE MARGT 32
There is no sign of a birth in Ireland or a marriage or a death in Victoria for Linden. I can't even tell if that is a different family possibly even from Scotland.
Margaret's father James HAMILTON died about 1867 and her mother Ellen/Helen (nee NEWELL) also about 1867. I don't know where they may have married, Antrim or Down and I'd guess they both died in Down. It seems James and his sons were farmers in Ballykine. I have more information on two of the sons, John and William, which I can supply if it will help.
Thanks.

If you hit the wall and get curious about other McCoubrey lines that might connect, my suggestion is McCOUBREY familt trees in volumes13p35 Castlenavin, 13p112, vol 17, vol 21, vol 91. These volumes are in appear in the Blackwood Family history manuscript trees in the LinenHall library, Belfast. I suggest you ask them for photocopying estimates if they think your knowledge relevant and you should be prepared to pay a fee for copying, post and packing, and perhaps some staff time and overheads. However if the material is really relevant when you get it, I suggest a further donation to this unique library that is always needing extra funds . Linen Hall Library,17 Donegall Square North, Belfast BT15GB, Northern Ireland, Telephone: +44 (0)28 9032 1707, Fax: +44 (0)28 9043 8586, Email: <irish.reference[at]linenhall.com>.replace the [AT] with the symbol please have you used Ros Davies Co Down website? Good luck, Jim

Hello Jim,
Thank you for your suggestions.
Yes, I have been all through Ros Davies' site and have exchanged several emails but it all seems a brick wall. There is no sign of the deaths of James and Ellen and no sign of their marriage and no trace of the births of any of their children. Even knowing John HAMILTON was born on 1 Jan 1836 does not help because his RIC service record simply says he joined in Down.
Public Records Office, Kew, Richmond, Surrey, England
Service Number: 18210 Name: HAMILTON, John Age when joining: 18 years Height: 5 feet 7 ¾ inches Native County: Down Religion: Pres. Date of Marriage: Native Co. of Wife: Recommended by: S.I. Stafford Trade or Calling: Labourer Date of Appointment: 14 April 1854 Allocations: Fermanagh (6 Aug 1854) Reserve ( 1 Nov 1856) Armagh (5 Feb 1858) Promotions or Demotions: 1st sub constable (1 Oct 1854) Rewards Punishments Discharge: Resigned Discharge Date: 31 August 1858 Injuries: Remarks: "to emigrate to Australia"
Death Reg# 7694 1922 Ballarat, Victoria age 86 (James Hamilton & Ellen _)
I have not been able to find anything about S.I. Stafford.
I also have a copy of his brother Wiliam's RIC service record. However his age on joining and his age at marriage and his age at death give three different birth dates from 1823 to 1827. He also joined in Down:
National Archives, Dublin R.I.C. Service Records 5271-10750 MFA 24/2 6000 Sept 1844. 7000 May 1845. 8000 Oct 1846 - R.I.C. Service No 7533 Joined 9 Dec 1846 - Age 21 - 5' 11 1/2" - Co Down - P(resbyterian) - Rev J Shaw, Clerk - Farmer
I had more luck Rev J Shaw: 1st Ballynahinch Presbyterian Church - The Ordnance Survey Memoirs of 1836 describe it as a plain, slated, roughcast, rectangular building with 3 galleries; there were 100 regular attendants then when Rev. Shaw was the minister; he lived at The Spa, near Ballynahinch & was minister from 1831-1870.
That's all I have. James and his son James were farmers in Ballykine and sons William and John joined the RIC in Down and sister Margaret married McCOUBRIE in the same place, Ballynahinch. All three ended up in Australia.
Regards,
fred2
