My Great, Great Granny Willoughby

UK to Belgium
« on: Tuesday 17 March 09 15:32 GMT (UK) »

Hi All
fra
Sometime before 1901 my great great aunt went to Belgium (possibly) with her husband leaving their son with his grandparents.

Mary Jane Willoughby b1876 Ogbourne, Wiltshire married Charles C E Verbregue b1876 Belgium in Westminster 1893. The had a child William John E Verbregue in 1895 who died the same year & then Philip C E Verbregue b1897. There looks to be one other child b1899 who again died  the same year.

In 1901 Philip is with his grandparents Cahrlotte & John Willoughby living in Wiltshire. I have heard from Philip's grandaughter & he changed his name to Willoughby after being formally adopted by his grandparents.

Can anyone see if the did indeed go? Or point me in the right direction please?

Many thanks

Regards Suzanne

Problem: they won't be on findmypast if they went back to Belgium as European ship lists weren't kept in the UK.

At any rate, I don't know if Mary went at all, or just Charles did - because on freebmd in 1909 Mary Jane Verbregue/Verbreque appears to have remarried in Hackney.

at www.historicaldirectories.org there appears to be a Eugene Verbregue, part of Brazenor and Verbregue, bicycle makers, in 1899. This is the only directory the name appears in.

Hi

Perhaps Charles died. I'm just going by what my great aunt told her son. Sadly all my relatives on that side are gone, my gran died last year & it was her aunt.

Mary's sister married a chap from france & they lived there. Their son was taken to a prisoner of war camp (he died there) & the family were never heard of again Sad after the war.

Thanks for your help. I'll look at the marriage record. I never thought to look there!
