Information please about Ship Owner Charles A Jerrett.
« on: Tuesday 17 March 09 18:44 UTC (UK) »

I'm looking for information about a ship owner Charles A Jerrett.

The Lloyds Register has him as owner of a ship called the 'Canadian'. She was built in 1901 by H Oxner in Chester Basin Nova Scotia and was registered in Lunnenberg, Nova Scotia.

Please can anyone help?

Hello,

He appears on 1891 census with family:

George C - b. 1835 Exeter - Father
Miriam - b. 1837 - newfoundland
Charles A - b. 1866 new foundland
Marion - b. 1875 new foundland

George is a fish merchant

Then if you look in Nova Scotia his father must have been important:

There are also pictures of charles and his children:

this should be a start.

cheers

Sorry the census result has them living in Toxteth, Liverpool at the time.  I cannot find them on any other census so assume they were in canada.  They are lots of entries on canadian passenger lists for charles coming and going from the uk also.

Hi aghadowey

Thanks for those websites.   Can't find Charles A Jerrett on them but, from the information that Nikw has given me, it would seem that he was born in Newfoundland not Nova Scotia.   My mistake.   Do you have any websites for there, by any chance?

Hi Nik

Thanks for all that information.

Charles A Jerrett's father George certainly sounds quite an interesting person.

I have found that Charles A Jerrett was on a passenger ship from St Johns to New York in 1922 with a son, and his wife was still in Brigus, Newfoundland.   Can't find any more about him owning the 'Canadian'.

I tried the 1901 and 1911 Canadian censuses for Nova Scotia and can't find any Jerretts there.   I maybe need to access the ones for Newfoundland.

It was interesting that you mentioned them living in Toxteth, Liverpool in the 1891 (?) census.   I am trying to tie Charles A Jerrett in with Samuel Strong Jerrett who lived in Toxteth and was also a ship owner.   His father Robert Jerrett was a Master Mariner and travelled all over the world, including North America.

Hello,

Tried to have a look into the link between Samuel and Charles.

Robert parents: Willam b. 1771 Crediton parish devon (morchard bishop)?
George parents: James b. 1806 crediton parish devon (morchard bishop)?
Robert b. 1821 Crediton parish devon.  (morchard bishop)?

1841 census Robert is living with William who is in his 70's  james could be his brother??

There are 91 Jerretts appearing on 1841 census in devon but only a small %% have Morchard Bishop.

Both William and James are employed as coopers? could be a family trade or is it just the area.

Anyway its something to start on.

good luck

Hi Nik

Fantastic Grin

Actually this is not the right Robert, but Morchard Bishop is only about five miles from where my Jerretts come from in Sandford, Devon (both are in the Creditin area).   So they could well be related somehow.

My Robert, the Master Mariner, was b 1815 in Sandford, parents James b1780 and Mary Cousins.   Robert married Sarah Strong b1813 Sandford and Samuel Strong Jerrett, the ship owner, was their youngest son.   Another son, Robert, was also in a sailor in the merchant service according to the 1861 census.

Thankyou for all that information, it gives me something to go on Smiley

The only in H. Oxner I can see in Chester Basin Nova Scotia is this Howard, who is also a merchant. But can't see any ship building associated with him, either...
I found a  Jasper Oxner who built the " Freedom" Schooner - 1844 Londonderry

Geo. Churchill Jerrett's christening has mother as Marianne
JAMES Jerret married Mary Ann Churchill Mar.31 1834, Saint Mary Major, Exeter

If there is a Sanford connection there's these to look into from IGI extracted files...:
There's a christening....
James Jerrett -Aug 1, 1803, Sandford, Devon to a James & a Mary
also a Thomas & 2 Roberts...one of whom might be your Robert

James Jarrett & Mary Cousins marry Dec. 26, 1802 Sanford

Joan...This person says he has the Jerrets back to the 1600's so if that's more than you have ...
http://genforum.genealogy.com/jerrett/messages/148.html

also there is this spelling John Baugh JARRETT of Wales, but also a ship-owner, in case that name ever turns up.

Did the site say built in 1901 or acquired in 1901...looking into the actual ship...find that there were three ships called "Canadian" that were owned by the allan line steamship co.  (each replacing another, lost earlier in the 1800's...I can't find when the 3rd ship stopped running...
but do notice ships "Canadian" trips from 1879 to 1891 seem mostly marked as Allan ships, but the later trips Liverpool to Boston from 1907 to 1911 are not marked at all for ownership...might be a clue to follow...J.J.
