Willisons in Limerick, c1880
« on: Wednesday 18 March 09 23:16 UTC (UK) »

Looking for two births in Limerick c. 1880 :

James Willison and William Willison (James c. 2 years older than William). Both were sons of James Willison and Maggie O'Hare who went to Limerick from Scotland c. 1878-1881 but returned to Scotland. Any info on the family in general whilst in Ireland would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!  Smiley

Index to Irish Civil Registrations shows 2 possibilities. Search here for details of volume and page numbers need to order the certificates:

Thank-you aghadowey. Those certainly look like 'my' boys.  Smiley

By the way, their mother was Maggie O'Hare ( but sometimes O'Hara in Scottish BMD records). Was it common to find O'Hare and O'Hara interchanged in Ireland in past times? Also, do you know if either name was considered a 'local name' in and around Limerick? I am unsure if they visited Ireland for those few years for work or to visit her relatives.

One more question : where can I order copies of the certificates?

Many thanks

There are usually lots of variations in Irish surnames- could be O'Hara, Hare, Hara, etc.

Gro, Dublin is one source for ordering certificates:
www.groireland.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm

Someone with more local knowledge of Limerick might be able to help further.

Hi

You might also like to have a look at these sites

If you search for a birth for James Willison - no date - then just put Ireland in the place -you should see a civol registration entry for a James Willison July-Sept 1878
The same for William - a birth registered Oct-Dec 1880.

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start

This next site has records on line. It's free to register and search but costs 5 euros to view each record.
Select county Limerick. If you search for  Willison (no other details )you should see a few births/marriages etc. Could be relatives?
Then search for James Willison . There's an entry for a birth for a James in 1878. Input the father's name (James)and search again to double check.
Do the same for William. There's a birth for a William Willison in 1880 - father James.

I tried each parish and they both seem to have been registered in Limerick no 2.
If you press 'view' this is when you will be charged if you have put anything on the account.

To find out what information you would get on this site(civil registration )- click on 'samples' at the top.
(not sure whether the address is recorded here or if sending for the actual birth cert might give an address?)

Hope this helps
