High St. ,Ballyraggett
« on: Thursday 19 March 09 07:08 GMT (UK) »

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to reseach a Bakery that was on High St. in Ballyraggett. The name of the Bakery would have been McGrath's.

Does anyone have any suggestions on books or websites that have information on the town of Ballyraggett ?

Thank you,
Megan

McGrath entries for Ballyraggett in Slaters Commercial Directory of 1894

John McGrath, baker

also

Maria McGrath, grocer & draper

no address given for either so probably Main Street

Shanew147,

Thank you for replying to this thread.

John McGrath - son of Martin McGrath
took over the bakery when his father died in 1882 . So the one you posted fits for him having the bakery in 1894 .

Thank you for looking that up for me. Cheesy

in the 1881 edition Ballyraggett is listed with Castlecomer - no McGrath bakers listed that I can see :

Michael McGrath, Ballyragget
Grocer & Spirit Dealer also listed under Linen & Woolen Draper

James McGrath , Ballyraggett - Farmer

I dont see any McGrath businesses in Ballyragget in 1870

in that edition there's a Bakers in Castle-Bellingham (Co. Louth) named  Margaret McGrath...may not be a connection but interesting that there's more McGrath bakers.

Shane,

Thank you for looking further. Martin McGrath (father ) was from Co. Laois and he may not have had his Bakery in Ballyragget but in Rathdaowney.

But I know definately that his son John took over the business and he definately had it on High St in Ballyraggett.

The dificulty in searching the father is that his last name was CREAGH on some records and then MCGRATH on other records.

But his 2 sons JOHN and JAMES kept the MCGRATH name. His other children immigrated to America and their names are listed as CRAUGH .

So I always have to search all 3 names !!! ARGHHH!!

Thanks for your help,
Megan
