James, son of Eliza and Charles was my great-grandfather. He married Hannah Hogan in Melbourne (their marriage record gives Eliza's maiden name as Hames, as does James' birth certificate.) In 1876 they went from Melbourne to NZ. I have information on their time and family in NZ. Hannah died at my grandmother's in Timaru in 1920. In the Sydenham cemetery records, she is 'widow'. I could not find her headstone when in NZ this year. I tried to verify whether James d.1929 was 'our' James, but no success. He seems to have lived with the eldest son Charles and his wife, after about 1910. (Christchurch electoral records.) Between about 1846 and 1858 or 9, the Talbot family seems to have been at Chatham; but no trace in 1851 census. I do not know when Eliza died.

My Talbots are descended from Albert James born in Albert Park Melbourne 1876 just before the Talbots sailed to NZ. He died 1950 in Christchurch but my details on him are sketchy as my grandfather, Fraser, came to Australia c 1920, and to my mothers knowledge never mentioned any of his family.
Fraser married Irene Lynch in Victoria in 1922 and lists his parents as Albert James and Fanny Osborne and that he was born in Auckland. The family were not able to find a birth cert for him when he died and Im still not able to find a copy or details on any marriage between his parents. By the age of Albert James at the time Im guessing they werent married.
After marrying in 1922 Fraser and Irene resided in Albert Park, Im guessing the family still had connections there. Their first child born there. They had 3 children in all, my mother the youngest (she is still alive)
James and Hannah had 9 children by my reckoning - 5 in Melbourne and 4 in NZ. At least 3 died at very young ages.
In the 1861 James is working at the Nags Head Hotel, The Hard, Portsea, and while he sailed on the Arawata to NZ in 1876 I cant find his arrival here. He is listed as a "boarding house operator" on Alberts death cert. In 1851 he was living in Chatham Kent with the family as Charles was a policeman and must have moved with work.
Charles parents were James and Lydia Barnett, in turn James parents Thomas and Olivia Strugnell - always in and around Portsmouth.
If you would like more info please let me know - happy to forward through

Eliza Talbot (b 1870) was my paternal grandmother. She married my grandfather, Edward Dalton, in New Zealand in 1901. My father, Robert Hennah (shown as Hannah in some records) Talbot Dalton was born in Christchurch in 1902. The family left New Zealand in 1904 eventually settling in Toronto where my grandfather's family was located. When my father was 10 (i.e. in 1912) the parents separated with my father and his younger brother Edward moving with their father (Edward) to California and their mother (Eliza) remaining in Toronto. My understanding is that Eliza and Edward passed away in 1935 and 1938, respectively. My father married and had three sons, Robert (1937), Thomas (1939 - 2008) and James (1943). I'd be happy to provide any additional infomation desired and would be interested in learning more about other Talbot descendants. Thanks.

Hullo All! In my tree I have a great aunt, Ethel Goater who married John Charles Talbot in Portsmouth in 1903. He was the son of John Talbot who was born circa 1847 in Chatham and his mother was born Adelaide Catherine Hames in Titchfield in 1852. John and Adelaide married at St.Mary's Portsea 28/1/1875. John senior worked as a rigger and moved back to Kent where he died in 1925.
According to Susan Colson who I contacted on GenesReunited John was the son of the above mentioned Charles and Eliza. Susan is a direct descendent of Albert Talbot (1857) and has information on a few more. (I will alert her to this thread.)
John junior and Ethel had two children that I am aware of:Phyllis(c.1904 ) and Ronald(1906). I don't know what became of them as our families never communicated.
Regards, Phil

Hi My family are decended from Albert Talbot and Sarah Jane Mullet. They lived in Portsmouth, Albert was a blacksmith in the dockyard. My grandfather was Charles Albert and he married Augusta Thomas in 1911 and they had Frederick Albert and my dad Harold Aubrey. Augusta died in 1919 and then Charles married Nellie Minchin and they had Dorothy. They moved to Gosport in the 1930's where Charles died in 1952 and Nellie in 1966. Harold died in 1982, Fred moved to Scotland in 1942. I hope this helps. Sue
