From memory I think Doherty (and it's variations) is the most common surname in Co. Donegal but in this case you might be in luck because the marriage was after the start of civil registration.

Marriage- Michael Doherty 1872 Stranorlar registration district (vol. 17 page 385). Sarah Anne Patton also on same page (see birth below which seems to confirm her middle name). From this you've now got an idea of the area in Co. Donegal.
The marriage details above are what you need to order the full certificate which will list their residences at time of marriage, occupations and fathers' names and occupations as well as the exact date and place and names of 2 witnesses.

Having trouble with Internet at the moment but if you google 'gro, dublin' then click 'apply for certificate' you should be able to get the correct page.

Do you know when they left for Australia?
I found one child: Robert Henry Doherty born 19 Feb.1879 Curraghmone, Donegal, Ireland (Curraghmone (sp?) could be the district rather than the townland)- parents Michael Doherty and Sarah Anne Patton.
Suspect there would have been other children born 1872-1878 but you might find more details of them in Australian records.

Thanks for your info no I don't know when they left for Australia but my Grandmother Annie Doherty born 10 July 1881 Brisbane Australia. On her birth cert 3 other children Catherine 8 Sarah 4 and Robert Harry 2. Eldest two born Brisbane but cannot find Robert on Qld bmd. The one you cite fits age parents etc but strange they would return to Ireland in 1879 and then returned to Australia by 1881. I will order birth cert again thanks a lot for your help.

I now have info from their marriage certificate November 1872. Married at RC chapel Stranorlar, Michael resided at Ballynaglack,  Sarah at Curraghomongan. Parents Robert Doherty and Laurance Patton (decd). As they married RC probability they were both baptised as such. As they were born c1847 and 1848 were baptismal records made/kept by the church in those times?
Regards
Zane
