I am particularly interested in 19th Century London Questeds.  There is a QUESTED GOONS study.  I am in touch with the coordinator.

I am trying to trace the birth name of William Morris Quested. There is evidence to suggest he was born in London and was adopted there.

His (adoptive) father was William Dawson Quested.

William Morris married Doris Payne on 30th September 1939.

It is likely that he was born William MORRIS, so I would not have him.

From clues on your Emberson site I think he must be the one on Ancestry; DOB 30 June 1918 (this is on a passenger list).  His Death Cert index entry is also on Ancestry.

From FreeBMD there is a likely candidate:

Births Sep 1918   (99%)
Morris    William H    Morris    Lambeth    1d   399

Births Dec 1918   (98%)
Morris    William    Morris    Wigan    8c   192

The first one is likely - you could send for the certificate.
If you are not on Ancestry I could send you the data from there.

pjbuk007,

Thank you for taking the trouble to reply.

The name William Dawson Quested is one which was given to us by my wife's parnts when we filled in my eldest son's birth book some 34 years ago.

I have no reason to think they would have given us misleading information, but there is always that possibility (though I can't help asking why a grandparent would want to do that).

I'm not on Ancestry so I'd like to take you up on your offer to send me the data.

The information  I have is:

William Dawson Quested 1871 - 1943
married Charlotte Pollard 1874 - 1943. We believe they adopted Willam Morris very soon after his birth in 1918.

Again, thank you for taking the trouble to help.

Have you got the BMD certificates for William, Charlotte and their offsring?  And do you have them in the censuses?
From FreeBMD,
Their marriage:
Pollard    Charlotte         Camberwell    1d   1433
Quested    William         Camberwell    1d   1433

No Dawson - perhaps his Mother's surname was Dawson?

They were quite old when they adopted William Morris.  Do they have other children?

I have William QUESTEDs in  London in my tree - if you can give me more detail, I can have a look and see whether this is one of them.

Will PM you.

My wife's parents were very secretive about these matters and I'm really struggling with this side of the family tree.

As far as we know William was an only-child (there's a clue to this, I guess, in his adoptive parents being old).

We did get sight of his original birth certificate some years ago and are now regretting not taking more notice of his birth name.
