Internet Explorer 8 now released
« on: Friday 20 March 09 09:50 UTC (UK) »

The latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 is now on general release.  You can download it here.

I've been using IE8 since the second beta release, and I would not want to go back to earlier versions.  It has a lot of new features, including a "compatability" button for web sites which use "dodgy" coding which causes display problems (I'm sure we can all think of one !  Wink ).

Don't forget to add both RootsChat and Ancestry to "Compatability Mode"  Smiley

There's a small icon that is next to where the URL is displayed that will add a site to the compatability mode list.  RootsChat's incompatability isn't too serious - the "Family Tree" index doesn't display properly, and you can have problems entering things into search boxes.  Both are fixed in compatability mode.

Hi Nick,

I downloaded it and got all sort of trouble, the Microsoft Error page message kept coming up, then it would shut down, so in the end, I put the version I had back on.

Hiccup along the way somewhere, as I can't always retrieve my Hotmail, I get "Can't connect to the Internet", which is funny, because I have Rootschat sitting in another window Huh   Today, I switched on, and had the blue screen with all the white writing saying there was a serious error and had to restart with computer.

Any ideas please.

Cheers

No, never have had to in the past everything has always gone smoothly.

Ran my virus checkers yesterday, and seems it now seens to be going smoothly but the Hotmail still playing up, could be their end though as I didn't download IE and Hotmail played up for ages last night.

I can sympathise with those who have had problems.

I too downloaded and installed it and had no problems until I tried to use it.

It wouldn't connect to the Internet for some reason even though it was using the connection settings from IE7.   I did a system restore and went back to IE7, however I soon had problems with that as well.  I managed to connect to the Internet but the menubar and the titlebar at the top of the screen had disappeared for some reason.  I tried the old Alt + V shortcut key but to no avail.

In the end I used the Issues section of CCleaner to completely remove IE8 and normal services were resumed.  Phew!

Progress you can't beat it.

In future any update with the No 8 in I shall avoid at all costs, even if it is free Wink

I installed IE8 on an "ex-office" computer that had been sitting in the spare room for months - it had IE6 and SP2 on it to begin with.

I installed IE7, then SP3, then IE8 - no problems at all  Smiley

P.S. I wouldn't touch AVG Free with your barge pole - if you're intent on having a free virus checker, then Avast is miles better.

I had problems with IE8 as well and after fruitless searches through there website for a fix and also finding others online with the same problem I removed it.

I'll wait a while and see if they do some fixes for it before I try again

I've discovered why it won't connect to the Internet

It changed a setting on the Tools >> Internet Options >> Connections tab from:

Always dial my default connection

Never dial a connection X

I've now changed that setting and I'm up and running with IE8.

I'm glad you got it working  Smiley   IE8 has some nice features which you don't find on IE6 or IE7.
