Help William Hughes born Anglesay
« on: Friday 20 March 09 15:13 UTC (UK) »

I cannot find William Hughes born 1844 in Llangwyfan, Anglesay in the census of 1851 and 1861.   I have found him and his wife Margaret and children in 1871.  He was a quarryman and lived in Landdeiniolen, Caernarvonshire.   I have found him in 1881, 1891 and 1901.  Can anyone help me as I would like to find his parents if possible.

Thanks.

Hi spanishlady

Do you have a marriage certificate for William & Margaret?  the reason I ask is that some of the couples in thie area changed their surnames patronymically when they married in mid 19th century.  So your William could possibly be the son of a Hugh Jones for example.  Not necessarily the case but something to keep in mind.

Do you know if sons Thomas & William, both age 9 in 1881 and 20 in 1891 were twins?

There are a Thomas Hughes and William Hughes both on the same page
Jun Q 1871, Carnarvon, 11b page 512.

If you don't have a birth certificate already you may need to get one before finding the marriage.

I think this could be your William in 1851.    He is transcribed as age 2 but it could be a 7 with a tick through it.   Wink

ref HO107/2520/266/4  Llangwyfan Anglesey
John HUGHS, head, m, ag lab, age 41, born Llanfaelog
Jane HUGHS, wife, age 45, born Llangristiolous
William HUGHS, son, age 2, born Llangwyfan
Elysabeth HUGHS, dau, age 1, born Llangwyfan

In 1861 John & Jane are back to being HUGHES again, ages 51 and 53, same house "Gwynigar" in Llangwyfan.  ref  RG9/4364/33/5    The only child in the household is a nephew William ROBERTS, age 3 born Llanfaelog

There are two deaths for Margaret HUGHES of roughly the right age.  Unfortunately both are in the same quarter - Dec 1874
Margaret HUGHES, age 30, Carnarvon, vol 11b page 323
Margaret HUGHES, age 30, Carnarvon, vol 11b page 326

ADDED
possible in 1861 Llangwyfan   RG9/4364/32/3
William Hughes, age 18, ag lab/servant, born Llangwyfan

I am sure you are right as William´s first child was called John probably after his father as was usually the case.  I now have to find if his wife Margaret was Margaret Wiliams.  As a William Hughes married a Margaret Williams in 1862 and their first child John was born in 1864.  Also in a census an A Ellen Williams was a visitor, so that is my next quest.

Thanks very much.

Yes I am sure that John and Jane are his parents.  I now cannot find John in 1841.   Would you have any luck.   Thanks.
