The Revel Family
« on: Friday 20 March 09 15:40 GMT (UK) »

Hi all,

am trying to verify the father of  Archibald REVEL (who married a Janet Finlay) is A Revel who married a Charlotte FOYER on 26 Dec 1836.   Only know that the AR I can find find died in 1873 but cannot find the link between the 2.

The best way for you to verify the parents for Archibald is to look at the marriage cert for Archibald and Janet on 09 MAR 1872      Ladhope, Roxburgh. This is available to view on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, which is a pay to view but v. reasonable. This will include full details on bride/groom's parents including mother's full name.

Certainly looking at the census, it is likely that Archilbald and Charlotte were his parents.

1851:

Archibald Revell 41, Woolen Framework Knitter, b. Jedburgh
Charlote Revell 34, Woolen Hosiery Seamstress, b. England
Mary Revell 12
Francis Revell    9
Charlote Revell 7
Christian Revell 5
Archibald Revell 2

Address: High Street, Hawick

All the children show as born as Hawick.

1881 and after Archibald and Janet's marriage:

Archibald Revel 31, Millworker, b. Hawick
Janet Revel 28, b. Galashiels, Selkirk
Archibald Revel 8, b. Galashiels, Selkirk
Robert Revel 6, b. Galashiels, Selkirk
Agnes Sherreff 18, boarder b. Selkirk

Address:Douglas St No 21, Galashiels, Selkirkshire

Harry

Its ages since I last visited this forum, serves me right I suppose when I have only just spotted your posting. Hope you have cleared up the problems you had back in March. My 4 x great grandfather was Thomas Revel born circa 1811 in Jedburgh who from my research is almost certainly the younger brother of Archibald Revel born circa 1810 in Jedburgh. Their father was Francis Revel, their mother Elizabeth (Betty) Hunter. I am currently on the trail of the origins of Francis, I have been working on an hunch for about 18 months now with no success but only last week I discovered some information that should finally tie things together.

One thing I have found most frustrating during my research is the spelling on the census, birth certs, marriage certs, death certs etc. of Revel. By the late 19th century my line appear to have adopted the spelling Revill but before that I have found it spelt Revel, Revell, Revil, Revill, Revele, Ravell it was even transcribed as Rasile in the 1841 census. Generally I have taken to searching Rev* initially, it has found most of my ancestors.

As Monica said earlier Scotlands People contains excellent information, the records include far more information than the equivalent English ones and are very reasonably priced considering what you get. If only they had started earlier, Francis died between the 1851 census and the start of records in 1855 and this has left a huge gap in the available info.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Paul
