Wherever I Lay My Hatley's...
« on: Friday 20 March 09 16:22 UTC (UK) »

H guys,

I am stuck with my Hatley connection in Cambridgeshire. I have an Edward Hatley born in Newmarket in 1833. Due to boundary changes, Newmarket then was listed as being in the county of Suffolk.

Edward's parents are Samuel Hatley and his wife Jane. I have found Samuel on a few census' but his age conflicts big time, sometimes by as much as 10 years. Can anybody help me to sort this out...I am quite stumped by it all. The majority of the census have Samuel's birthplace down as Wood Ditton. On anther note, I did look on the IGI. The nearest entry I could find was in the 1790's!

I am not sure what to do next. I am not entirely sure if the Samuel's on each census are the same guy, as he seems to have been widowed.

Any help appreciated here, I am finding it difficult getting my head around this family!

Regards and thanks for reading. If you need any more info please ask Smiley

As for age, I sympathise. I believe I've told you about my Walter Jones, whose age on census gave him a date of birth range of 1805-1813. Mostly it depended on which wife he was with- his first wife was c1797 and second wife was c1826, so he altered his age to suit. So it happens...

Can't help with the rest of it I'm afraid Smiley

Hi,
The only baptisms for Samuel Hatley on Cambridgeshire baptisms index are
Samuel Hatley bn 18 Oct 1786 bap 10 June 1798 at Horseheath son of John and Elizabeth
Samuel Hatley bap 25 Jan 1807 Fordham, son of Edward and Jane

Do you have the details for Samuel and Janes marriage in 1829 at Wood Ditton? One of the witnesses was Edward Hatley.
There is no baptism for Samuel in Wood Ditton about that time.

Are you sure of the spelling of the name? Remember in this era (the 1830s) standardised spelling was only just beginning to take off.I ask this because the surname Hartley is quite common in the area of Bottisham /Lode Cambs, and that is only two or three villages from Newmarket.

Hi tempsford.

I have a few census' that I have do have Fordham as Samuel's place of birth, around 1805-8. Withthis in mind, Iwoul say that the baptism in 1807 you have found is extremely likely to be that of my ancestor.

I will be honest I did not expect to see that. Thanks for looking him up for me. Do you have details as to when Edward and Jane married? I'm presuming it would be in the 1790's?

On the subject of Samuel's married to Jane in 1829, I do have details of that yes I believe her maiden name was Coe, and her father was called John.

Regards and thanks again. This is a very good find. Cheers!

Hi redroger,

All of the census and other documents I havefor this family state them as either Hatkey or Hattley. In my searches I have to admit I have found a fair few Hartley's, but none seem to fit into my Hatley's. It is definitely something to keep an eye out for though.

Main thing is Matt you are aware of the connection, I'll look out for Hatley etc. when Hartleys appear in my Bottisham research and tell you if anything turns up.

I have a Catherine Linsdell born 1701, father Thomas, in Linton. I believe her mother's name was Jane. That is all I have on this branch at the moment. It is direct but quite far back so resources are of course limited Smiley

Reaybo M I just looked at the Maris Family website, where there are several Hatleys mentioned. Just type Maris family website into your browser and it should come up.

Hi Redroger,
Sorry, Henry Holmes was a witness to the marriage, I don't know about any connections to Ayres and Cornwell families.

Bingo there's the children!

Thanks for those tempsford, I am sure I can get a few details on each of those kids! I have done a quick search on the IGI extracted entries and they dont seem to have anything on birth/baptisms for Edward Hatley or Jane Munns. I will continue looking and post if I find anything.

Thanks again for your quick and ample responses, any other info happily welcomed!
