Thanks for posting this - I've been meaning to book some time at St Nicholas House for a while but never got round to it. How busy have the search rooms been? or is it best to book some time regardless?

Many of the local registrars are now part of the DIGROS project, participating offices submit and have access to the digitised records.
The main advantage is that any participating office can access the entire database and is not restricted to events within their specific district, particularly useful for anyone who can access one office but requires searches for events in a different reg district.
To check if an office subscribes to the project it's worth visiting the relevant council website and searching the registrars or register office pages.
As an example the Highland Council site gives the following information relating to searches and copies of extracts from the register
If you require a certified extract (birth, marriage, death or civil partnership) you may apply to the Registrar of the district where the event was registered. Alternatively all computerised registration offices in Scotland can provide extracts for any event registered in Scotland.
With effect from 1 April 2009 the statutory fee for an extract is £14.00, unless the event was registered in the current year, in which case the fee is £9.00. Applications may be made in person, or by post.

We received a local paper yesterday with an update on services available to the East Lothian area. the service offers research on the census, records back to 1855 and access to the parish register the earliest of which are 1553. The research may be tailored to suit a persons budget from as little as £5 to a comprhensive package of £200 professionally researched and presented. to enquire you can telephone 0131 653 5220, drop in to the Brunton Hall, Musselburgh or email ancestors@eastlothian. or go to www.eastlothian.gov.uk you can also purchase topup vouchers for SP at Musselburgh or Haddington Library, start up is £6 and thereafter £4.80 there after to use in the library or on your own computer. Now the really good bit..
If your family lived in East Lothian area or Inveresk, you have free access to the censuses, and birth, marriage and death info before 1855 in the local history centre at Haddington Library.
Thought you all may like to know this...
