Hello, Does anyone know of a number of Russian Jews moving to England in the late 1700s/early 1800s? I know the problems with the 'Pale of Settlement' was probably the reason. My husband's ancestor Alexander Levy was a Russian Jew and married in 1809 in Newcastle. Did they settle in established Jewish communities? His children later anglicised their name to Leavey. All were married and baptised in churches, did many Jewish families have to do this? I would love to know any general details available or any useful links, Thanks, Sally

Thank you so much Willow, I have read these articles and they really are interesting. It has made me want to find out more! It seems such a shame they had to change their religion so quickly. It's amazing to think how difficult the journeys from Russia to England may have been. It seems possible that Alexander landed at a different northern port then moved to Bishopswearmouth then Newcastle. There's so much I don't know! Many thanks again for your help and time, Sally

Hi Sally, It's a pleasure - I've recently become interested in the Russian Jews myself (my son in law is Russian). I visited the WDYTYA show in London recently, and bought an excellent research book from the following group: www.jgsb.org.uk Some useful resources on the site.
Also, a little bit for you on the Jewish community in Newcastle. http://www.jewishgen.org/jcr-uk/Community/Newcastle.htm
Hope you find it useful - now to leave you in peace (sorry to bombard you!)
Take care, Paulene Good luck with your research.

Hello Brian, Thank you for your help, it's fascinating to read about life for Jewish migrants to the UK. Ours were tobacco pipe makers in Newcastle and Gateshead, but always wonder what they did back in Russia. Very best wishes, sally
