Perhaps I should record parents names and ages?

Where and when did Simeon and Sarah marry? COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 21 March 09 11:28 UTC (UK) »

After finding a note book amongst some old photo's we discovered my wife's grandmothers parents were Simeon Taylor born 1 Oct 1830 and Sarah Ann born 1832.
Checked for a marriage couldn't find one! So sent for "Grannies" birth certificate Sarah's maiden name was given as Perry.
Back to GRO and free BMD but we still can't find a marriage.
Their first child (that we know of) was born in 1855.
If any of you clever folk have better luck PLEASE, PLEASE let us know!!!

found them on a census pre-marriage ?

Sarah's PoB might give a clue as to a possible marriage location ..... not being (yet) transcribed in FreeBMD doesnt mean they werent - altho FreeBMD is pretty complete, theres many other reasons a Civil Marriage might not be shown ....

altho Sarah (Ann) states PoB = Lye in 1861 and I see her too there in 1851 (a Lodger / Visitor 'Clay Picker' )  .... back in 1841 she's in Old Swinford (Stamber Mill) - where Simeon also hails from according to the census ....

maybe Parish Registers are worth a search ?

Hi LKL
You beat me to it!!
I was just coming back to say that I had them on the 1861 census in Lye.
We've checked Old Swinford - found a baptism for Elizabeth (who I am assuming is the eldest child) and a couple of the others, but didn't see the marriage - maybe I missed it.
Do you have the references for the 1851 and 1841 census?
Thanks.

I'll have to search again - they were straightforward tho', if you use Lye as a Keyword in 1851, and Old Swinford in 1841.

I wonder if a mistake was made transcribing the original page...

I can see    Simeon Taylor             Aston Dec 1854    6d 378
Sarah Ann Perry         Aston Dec 1854    6b 378

Sarah is only name for that number on the page Simeon has 2 male 1 female & one wrong location for a male out of place.

May be worth contacting the record office for Aston .

Thanks for that Tazzie,
Though why they would go to Aston to marry beats me.
I'll order the cert and see what it shows.

Hi all, a lot of people from Old Swinford, Halesowen, Rowley Regis etc. Married in Birmingham.  Don't know why, probably different reasons, I do have one Marriage where an Ancestor Married his dead wife's sister (that was illegal at the time) in Aston, they gave their place of residence as Aston, when I know they lived in Rowley Regis, so that was obviously an out of the way place where too many questions were not asked.  You may find your Simeon and Sarah Ann were possibly Cousins Cember?  Best Wishes Linell.

Thanks for that Linell,
The OH has another pair who we couldn't find and it turns out they married at Aston Juxta - whilst living in Cradley. I've heard of another couple who lived in Clent and wanted to marry there but the vicar insisted they went to Rowley Regis for the service - presumably he didn't want to bother trekking to Clent!!
By the way Linell can I ask which branch of the Sidaway's are you researching ?

Hi Cember, you are right about the Clent Vicar, I have these notes:- Thus the Vicars of Clent were also the Vicars of Rowley Regis. Particularly during the incumbency of the Rev. Lyttelton Perry a great number of Rowley people came to Clent to be married, presumably because the vicar preferred that couples should come to him at Clent rather than that he should journey to Rowley
My Sidaways seem to have lived in Cradley Heath/Mushroom Green and Cradley.  I have Wm 1751 RR Married Sarah Littley.  Their son Thomas 1770 who Married Hannah Dimmock, their daughter Maria 1791 Married Thomas Stringer from Cradley Heath, they are my direct line.  The wealthy Sidaways were the Iron Mongers from Reddall Hill, more notes:-

Marble Stone In a Vault at the Parish Church in the Village are interred the remains of Benjamin Sidaway of this Parish who died 18th March 1772 aged 63 years. James his son who died 3.12.1750 in the ninth year of his age, Sarah, Hannah and Mary his daughters who died in infancy. Jane wife of the above named Benjamin Sidaway who died 16.5.1784 aged 77 years. Also Martha, daughter of Jeptha and Ann Gaunt, and wife of Thomas Sidaway of Reddall Hill House in this Parish who died 24.5.1796, aged 61. Horatio Trafalgar James, son of Thomas and Sidaway Jnr, who died 27.6.1807, aged 20 months. Thomas Sidaway of Redhall Hill House, son of the above named Benjamin and Jane Sidaway who died 25.2.1813 in the 78th year his age. James Sidaway of Foxoak Green House son of the above named Thomas and Martha Sidaway who died 8.6.1813 aged 51. This Monument was erected in the District of Reddall Hill Church at Fox Oak in remembrance, by their affectionate descendant Thomas Sidaway of Reddall Hill House in the year 1847. Also of Thomas (son of the above Thomas and Martha Sidaway, born April 25th, 1773, died December 17th 1855. Interred in vault at Rowley Regis Church Yard. (North Transept Arch.)

Hi Linell,
You and the OH are distant cousins! She also comes from the Thomas and Hannah line, there son Thomas married True Shaw and are her direct line.
They seem to have been the "poor side" of the family - mostly nail makers according to the census's. They were from the Rowley/Cradley area.

Oh thanks Cember <LOL> new I was from the poor line!  Actually Maria Sidaway and Thomas Stringer's Son Eli made good, he ended up with his own Chain Manufacturing Business, he could also read and write, so maybe Maria and Thomas made sure their sons at least had some education.  I did note that the daughters did not sign their names on their Marriage Entries, I would  imagine back then it was only the sons who received any education.  Best Wishes from Linell.
