Davey's from Brightlingsea/Colchester
« on: Saturday 21 March 09 13:38 UTC (UK) »

Hello
Does anyone out the have a connection to the Davey Family who lived in Jersey Grouville/Gorey for most of the 1800's.  James Davey from Brightlingsea/Colchester was there in 1841 and was a Fisherman/Mariner/Captain married to Margeret Mckeown.  There were seven children, that I know of and some stayed, others left.  One of the girls Margaret married a Woods, Alfred Porter, I think, not confirmed.  Walter Davey married Amelia?

These are my OH direct family through his mother.  Both she and her sister visited Jersey and met relatives in the 1930's but we have lost contact.  Does anyone have links with this family, I am keen to trace them forward and also back to Brightlingsea/Colchester in Essex.  I do have a fair amount of information about the family and would be happy to share.   Cool

Thanks very much   Smiley

Hi there 'buttercup',

I have been researching my Davey family in Jersey for quite some time now, and although they were there at the time you state, I don't recognise the names you have mentioned. Plus most of mine lived in town (St. Helier). But you never know, there may be a connection somewhere down the line...

Have had a look at Davey's born in Grouville between 1842 and 1879. Do any of these names mean anything:

Adelaide Mary
William
Susan Elizabeth
Cecilia
Walter
John Thomas.

Hi Stewart

The only one that maybe is Walter - do you know his Birth date please.  Thanks for responding, I think there may have been a couple of these Davey's families, maybe more in this area.  I think that this family which I am connected to I have traced back to Brightlingsea but unless I can find them there whith a family I can't connect them in Jersey.  The family I have traced are Fishermen/Mariners in Jersey though they may not have been before that.  The names that appear and reappear through the generations seem to be Robert, James, Walter and William - Charles is another - around this time.  I am sure about James Davey b:1819 Brightlingsea d: Barnstaple.  I don't know for sure who his father was?  A possible is Robert Davey Brightlingsea b: 1781 d: 1848 Colchester.  I only think that because of his name and where he's from, I haven't been able to connect him with a family.  But it's possible that if he has brothers and sisters (I am assuming that) they went to Jersey too!  Parish records would maybe offer a clue.  I had a kind person on here send me a list of Davey's but couldn't see one that looked right.  Not sure where to go after that.

Very possibly Mo - I just can't seem to make a connection - do you know where yours are from please?  How did they get there?  As I have mentioned in another reply today, I think there could be a connection with the Davey's in Jersey.  But I need to find out where they connect back before Jersey.  Are any of yours Engineers - although the family I am talking about were Fishermen/Mariners there is a strong Engineering trait (I that's the way to describe it) coming forward.  I mention some of the mens names in my other post today - do you recognise them?

Thnaks for your reponse   Smiley   Smiley

I can't tell you a specific date for Walter as I'm only looking at the index.

It's in Grouville births, 27 Jul 1871 to 29 Nov 1879, page 37.

Yes, I'm in Jersey.

The index entry is the information you require to order a certificate from the Registrar.

The furthest Davey I have got back to was a William Davey born around 1790. Married to a Mary De France.
Their children were Isaac William b. 1821, William b.1816, Mary b.1819 and Rachel b.1813. Most of the men down the line were shipwrights.
I am afraid I have hit a brick wall as to where they came from before that.

Hi Mo

Thanks for the response - you don't say where your shipwright Davey's are living so I must presume Channel Islands.  I don't see any of the people you refer to on the census in 1841 in the Channel Islands, thought it might help to pin down where they are from to see where they say they are from?  I am also assuming that you have found them in the census?

The family of Davey's that I have found were also said by the family to be shipbuilders but so far I have found fishermen/mariners and confirmed they are our family by connecting them back to England further forward.  And most of them ended up back in England, though some stayed.

Stewart

Thanks for that Stewart - I don't think they were born in Grouville, I think they lived there. But their births were probably registered as:
Robert Charles b: 1849 St Helier,
James William b: 1845 St Martin,
Margurite b: 1847 St Martin,
Emily b: 1851 St Martin,
Walter b: 1853 St Martin,
Mary Louisa b: 1857 St Hellier,
Caroline b: 1861 St Hellier, may have died young.
Parents were James Davey b: 1891 Brightlingsea & Margurete Mckeown b: 1824 Gibralter

Our line comes down through Robert Charles - Thanks for listening   Smiley   Grin

Sorry, yes they were all living in various town houses in St. Helier, (which is the main town of Jersey, Channel Islands) for the whole time, except for 1841 can't seem to track them down, maybe they left the island for a holiday/job Huh

I can tell you quite a bit about the Davey who married Margarite Mckeown on Jersey about 1844 and the family that she came from. They and their family go on to appear in the English census in Cowley and Oxford up to 1911 at least
