William signed up to serve in WWI

Passenger records add a little to your relationship discussion.
William Wall, 31, clerk accompanied by son Eric, 7, travelled from Montreal to London on the Ascania arriving 29 Nov 1926 with destination address 65 Benares Rd. Plumstead London (same address he showed for his father on his attestation papers).
William Jas Wall, 31, b. London, clerk, returned alone to Canada.  He travelled from Southampton to Halifax on the Asconia arriving 8 Jan 1927.  He was travelling to 196 Alton Ave. Toronto and his Canadian contact was his wife Mrs. E. M. Wall of the same address.  British contact was his father, Mr. A. Wall of 65 Benares road Plumstead London.

On the 3 June 1928 the Ascania arrived in Quebec from Southampton.  On board was Elizabeth M. Webb, 29, shorthand typist, b. Sidcup.  She was going to her fiance, Mr. William J. Wall of 31 Avenue Road, Toronto and her British contact was her father Sidney Webb of 1 Birkbeck Road Sidcup.  She was accompanied by Eric Wall, 8, b. Canada and he was going to his father at the same address and Sidney Webb was listed as his British contact and designated as friend.

16 July 1933 from Montreal to London on the Aurania were William Wall, 35, clerk and Elizabeth Wall, 34 going to 15 Birbeck Rd. Sidcup Kent.  Their return to Canada was from Southampton to Quebec on the Ausonia arriving 13 Aug 1933.  William J., 38 b. Erith and Elizabeth M., 35, b. Sidcup going to 117 Hazelwood Ave. Toronto.  She showed her residence in Canada was between May 1928 and 1933 and William's Apr 1912 to July 1933.

Wow Debbie - thanks so much for this.

I had given up hope of finding any connection with the Gorring's in Toronto apart from knowing that they went there.  Edith Maryon Q Gorring was born in London in 1899 as mentioned.  I know that they were finally divorced on 28th June 1928 and oddly enough William James Wall remarried someone with the same initials, Elizabeth M!  So your very detailed description of travels back and forth lead me to believe that Queenie and William had a child called Eric! I am presuming that because of his age and that his father had custody.  And both families were from the Plumstead area of London, where they may have met before going/coming to Canada.

Thank you again for the trouble taken - much appreciated

Hi
Thanks for all the information.  Bill definately did have a son called Eric, other children were Donald and Marilyn but we are getting to people who may still be alive here.
I can also confirm that his father lived at the address given with Bill's eldest sister, her husband and children.

Hi MIW

Am I right in assuming that Eric was from the first marriage, do you know anything about him?  Donald and Marilyn were probably from the second marriage.  I looked at the 1911 census and found Bill's father with his daughter.  I do understand that we are talking about living people coming forward but I am interested in knowing what became of them.  If you have any other information perhaps you could email me.

Thanks

I understood that Queenie had committed bigamy, but like all family stories you can't be sure till you get to the source.

Found a notice of the application for divorce - as i said never beleive all that the family tell you.

Hi

I think that in those days too adultery had to be cited in order for a person to get a divorce!  It was the case here though I don't know about Canada.  Certainly people had to actually be caught together and evidence had to be submitted to prove adultery - it wan't straightforward at all, it was made very difficult.  And there were times when adultery was used because it was the only way for the divorce to happen.  So who knows what was actually involved, difficult for us to say, without being a fly on the wall! Oh, how handy would that be!    Grin
