Death John McFarlane 1861-1867. - completed.
« on: Saturday 21 March 09 18:52 UTC (UK) »

Looking for death of John Mc Farlane between 1861 and 1867 in the Calton District of Glasgow.  John appears on the 1861 Census at 24 Green Street, Calton with wife Isabella and other family members.  Found death of Isabella 25 March 1867 at this address when she is shown as Widow of John McFarlane, Handloom Weaver.  Have been unable to find death of John on SP.  Any help appreciated as always.

John McFarlane, hand loom weaver, died 28th December 1866 aged 65 years. He was the husband of Isabella Malsch? and only his father's name (but no occupation) is recorded on the certificate, John McFarlane (deceased). His daughter, Isabella, marked the register.

Edit: Forgot to say - he also died at 24 Green Street.

hume,
Thanks for that.  I obviously missed it on SP.  Found his wife with no trouble.  Will go back
and get the copy of the certificate.  Appreciate your help.

Hello,
I am curious about your John McFarlane. I am looking for one that would be about his age, in Calton.
Did your John have a sister named Elizabeth who married a William Crichton?
Thanks so much.

Lea,
Sorry, I can't be much help to you.  As much as I know about John was that he was born in Ireland about 1798.  Married Isabella Malloch 13 October 1824 in Glasgow, this info from Family Search IGI.  Found John & Isabella on the 1851 and 1861 Census at 24 Green Street, Calton.  They did have a Daughter Elizabeth which may be a clue!  Their first child was named Janet which was the Christian name of Isabella's Mother.  Elizabeth was the next born so if they followed the usual naming patterns of that time, who knows? Have not come across the name Chrichton on my tree.  Please let me know if you think I can be of any further help.  Most of my family lived in the Calton area for close to two hundred years to the best of my knowledge.

Hello,
Thanks for responding. My Elizabeth McFarlane who married William Crichton was also born in Ireland and William Crichton was a weaver in Calton, also born in Ireland.  They were married in Calton 1818 by a Rev. John McFarlane.
The witnesses on births of their first 2 children were: Andrew and John McFarlane. I am assuming that this John McFarlane is not the same person as the Rev. John McFarlane.
Have you ever heard of a Rev. John McFarlane?
Do you have your John McFarlane's death record?
Do you have any Andrews in this McFarlane family?
Thanks so much!
Regards, Lea

Lea,
Don't believe I have heard of Rev. John McFarlane, I will have a look at my certificates and let you know.  I have the Death certificate for my John but it is short on info.  His Father was also John but nothing about his Mother is shown.  No Andrews in my family at this time.  Sorry I can't tell you more.  If you would like to contact me direct please let me know.  Don't know how familiar you are with Glasgow.  I was born in Glasgow and grew up in Calton so I may be able to fill you in on anything you are not sure of.

Lea,
No Rev. John McFarlane on any of my certificates.  It is probably a conincidence which will happen from time to time.  McFarlane seems to be quite common in the Glasgow area.

I have Cleland McFarlane, who died in Green Street, Calton in 1903 aged 63.  Any connection?

coonwarra,
Re Cleland McFarlane.  Sorry, the name does not mean anything to me at this time.  Good luck with your search.

Hello Jewel of the North,
I noticed in your research names "Aitken" is listed.
Would you have an "Elisabeth Aitken" who married "John Davie" Bookbinder in Lanark Glasgow, on 10th September 1797.  I just can't find who Elisabeth belongs to.
Other "Aitken"  researchers do not go as far back as my Elisabeth..   Cry
It would be wonderful if you could help me solve this mystery.   Smiley
Kind regards, Phyllis Davie    Cheesy

Sorry Phyllis

'My' Aitkens are from the Falkirk area.

Have you found Elisabeth in any of the census records?  That would give you an idea of where and when she was born and if you are lucky she might have an elderly parent(s) living with her.

You could also search the ScotlandsPeople website for her death entry.

Hello, Coonwarra & Jewel of the North,
Thank you for your replys. Unfortunately, not knowing Elisabeth's Parents & her birth date it has been difficult. I have searched the census records & have also printed out all the Elsabeths around her birth time in "Scotlands people". There are so many & the name Elisabeth must have been a family name or a popular name at that time.  I will continue & hopefully I may find her. Please keep my Elisabeth in mind, you may come across her.
Thank you, Phyllis   Smiley
