Topic: Morrisons or Kincaids from Campsie (Read 573 times)

I participated in a DNA study under Morrison but I do not have any close matches in that group. However, I am a very close match with a gentleman by the name of Kincaid who traces his ancestors to the Clachan of Campsie. In turn, he is a close match with three other Kincaids (various spellings) who also trace their ancestry to Campsie, but none of them is a close match with any other Kincaids in their project.
I have traced my Morrisons/Morisons as far back as early 18th century in the Parish of Durness, Sutherland and do not know of any that moved to Stirling. However, there were Morrisons in Campsie in the 18th century. Has anyone researched Morrison or Kincaids in that time period?
Any help or suggested sources of research would be appreciated.

Hello Ian,
Campsie Churchyard & Cemetery are full of both Kincaids and Morrisons.
There are two stones with the following inscriptions:
1.
1890 In Memoriam ISABELLA KINCAID beloved wife of Thomas Morrison
Born 2nd February 1840, died 15th June 1889
Also the above THOMAS MORRISON who died 2nd April 1897 aged 65 years
Also their daughter AGNES who died 15th September 1932
2.
Erected by Peter Kincaid Morrison in loving memory of his daughters
ANNIE who died in infancy
MARGARET (Sister in Glasgow Royal Infirmary) who died 31st January 1929
His wife CATHERINE HUNTER died 5th November 1940
The above PETER KINCAID MORRISON died 23rd March 1944
His daughter ISABELLA died 15th November 1959
His son THOMAS died 23rd July 1960
RACHEL SERVICE died 5th April 1960 aged 77 years, eldest daughter of the above Peter K. Morrison
So obviously at one point the two families inter-married. I have no idea if the the people in the above two stones are from the same line.
Not a lot of help to you I don't suppose?

Hi Anne,
Thanks for the information. I know very little about DNA but I think the YDNA (male) passes from father to son with the same characteristics, except that it can mutate every two or three hundred years. But it only acts that way from male to male.
This means that if two males have very similar YDNA, it is probable that they had a common male ancestor (possibly many generations back), which suggests that my male ancestor was a Kincaid or Mr. Kincaid's ancestor was a Morrison (either by adoption or by cuckold)
I suppose my next move might be to try to persuade a Mr. Morrison, whose ancestors lived in Campsie, to participate in the Morrison YDNA project

Hello, I think I may be of some help here as the people on the first gravestone mentioned were my great-grandparents Thomas and Isabella, and these on the second were my great-uncle's family.
My late brother (also Ian Morrison - odd to see the name!) took part in the Morrison DNA project and although I think he only got the most basic result (?12 markers? - I have the details somewhere), after his death I got news that his DNA sample had matched a Morrison family in the USA whose ancestor had emigrated to New York state from Comrie in 1775 or thereabouts. By that time we had already traced our Morrisons back from Campsie to Comrie, as my great-great-grandfather Duncan Morrison very considerately lived into the era of the census and his birthplace was given as Comrie. So this match with another family of Morrisons from Comrie made good sense.
The Comrie Morrisons do not appear (so far) to be at all related to any of the very numerous other family groups uncovered by the Morrison DNA project, and this has made me wonder if their use of the name arose in a completely different way.
There was a Kincaid expert on the Stirlingshire e-mail list a little while ago, and I will try to dredge up his address if it would help.

Hello Sheila,
You and I have been in contact before, and I compared your brother's DNA results to mine but, unfortunately, they do not match.
I will be in Campsie towards the end of July and will look around, although I do not have enough details to do much. I will also be in Comrie, visiting my cousin, so I will go to the cemetery to see whether there are any families that used the same fist names as did our family.
If you come across the contact information for the Kincaid "expert", please let me know.

I will jump in here and ask a question.....
I have run into a snag....
I have a JEAN KINCAID born c 1750 ish who had a son, John Spottiswood born either Nov 1775 or Nov 1776 in Falkirk.
This John Spottiswood later married in Airth in 1804 to a Agnes Scobbie
I believe his father was John Spotiswood...now if they were married or not I do not know at this point.
Possibly this expert KINCAID researcher has something in their files that would point the way..all one can do is ask.

Hi
My family line that I've trace back to comes from Campsie. Both of my great great great grandparents are from there and were both Morrisons, Alexander and Jean. At familysearch.org, it say that Alexander was baptized in Campsie, but other records show that he was born in Gargunnock (which is near Campsie). They later moved to Dunblane, and after Alexander died, Jean and her two sons (and their family) moved to Victoria county area in Ontario Canada.
