Carronshore
« on: Wednesday 30 September 09 19:43 UTC (UK) »

I have a letter dated 13 Jul 1929 from John W McGowan, Assistant Minister, Carronshore Church.
Does anybody know if this was a Church of Scotland establishment or Free Church?

Also has anybody ever heard of "William Russells Private Museum, Church Street, Carronshore c 1900" I have just discovered this on the internet and William is one of my direct ancestors - a hero of the Carron Dam Disaster.

Many thanks

Hi Fergie,

The Carron Dam Disaster - I ought to have put incident not disaster - occured on the 12th Feb 1890 when a party of schoolchildren/teachers fell through the ice and drowned.
William Notman Russell was passing on his engine, stopped and saved one of the girls - she (Sarah Maud Robertson) became a surgeon on Christmas Island with her husband and died their fairly young - but is commemorated on the Russell family grave at Larbert.
It was reported in the Falkirk & Linlithgow Journal of the 15th & 22nd Feb 1890, in the London Times 20th March 1890 and also the Scotsman of 13th Feb 1890.
But I`d never heard of his `Private Museum` until yesterday - I`ve emailed Falkirk Museum Service for any further info and am awaiting a reply.

If you`d like any further info just ask.

Thank you for that Mitch, I had wrongly assumed that the disaster had happened at the dam at Loch Carron but I can now assume that the drownings happened at the body of water near the iron works.

Good luck with your reasearch.

Cheers.
