Elusive Wakefields in Nelson ...
« on: Sunday 22 March 09 10:06 UTC (UK) »

*kisses the new BDM website*

I have finally found a set of parents I've been hunting for ages!  I'm waiting for their son's birth certificate to arrive, to hopefully tell me where the parents were born.

Can anyone give me some fresh ideas for searching in the meantime?

I can't find any record of the parents births, marriage or deaths in New Zealand, no other children, no births or marriage in England, and no luck so far with immigrant passenger lists!  I've searched all the shipping arrivals into Nelson for the 1860s and 1870s that I can find.  If they didn't land first at Nelson, I'm not sure where else to start hunting.

I've done familysearch, rootsweb, paperspast, google, freebmd for the UK, UK census for 1861/71, attempted Irish and Australian searches, but they're diabolical!

The son is George William Wakefield, born in Nelson 3 December 1878.

I'm 95% certain his parents are Clara Elizabeth and Alexander John Wakefield.

George married in Hawera, Taranaki, in 1910, and went back to Nelson for his honeymoon, or to live, so I'm assuming he may still have had family there.  He ended up in Auckland.

There is another George William Wakefield born to George and Mary the same year, but by a process of elimination, I think he's the one who died at 2 months of age.

What places would you go hunting??

looked on 1881 and 1893 Electoal rolls and they are not on there,

Street directories would be another option, just to confirm where they are

That could be a bingo!

Sooo - George William was born before they were married, and therefore had his mother's maiden name, if these are the correct parents?

Wouldn't an illegitimate child have taken the father's surname once the parents married?

This is interesting  :-)

You are a treasure!  I'm almost certain that's him.  I'd already gone through every other Alexander Gray on bdm and established that he must be the 1905 death.

Wow - I have parents names!  *twirls around the office*

You're a step ahead of me - I took time out last night from searching shipping lists to start going through Papers Past, but I hadn't found that entry yet.

There really isn't any one single database of shipping list for immigrants to NZ, is there??  It's madness searching without any idea of date or ship.

The trick to finding the death entry was alot of papers aren't yet searchable
but checking the Nelson burial records gave the death dates, then you have to go to the paper and browse by the date, which is no big deal...so bingo..you may have some more success with that paper if you can get exact dates.

Certainly looks like too much of a coincidence..not to be right people, but fingers crossed all will be revealed when you get your cert.

He has a probate if you look at archives.

I had to share this - I've BDM'd my way through likely looking Roberts and Anns - I must say there are what look like interesting glitches in the register.

Anyhow - just gone back to Papers Past and found this which could well be the right Robert Gray:

-Ahaura
Mr F Guinness and Mr J.D. Pinkerton, the former representatives of the Ahaura district in the Nelson Provincial Council, intend again offering themselves for the seats, and Mr Robert Gray, a miner in the No Town district, has intimated his intention of contesting one of the vacancies.  Mr Gray is well known among the mining community, and can make a fair appearance in speech or print.

A correspondent of the Evening Star, in referring to the chances of Mr Robert Gray, gives the following brief warning -
Oh Gray! most green, presumptiously to think,
Thy sober color can replace our Pink,
Desist in time, your chances are but blue,
And you'll look black when properly put through.

Well, I found potential marriage records on BDM:

1855/17  Ann McDonald     Robert Gray
1855/19  Ann McDonald     Robert Gray

Narrowing the dates down, I get marriage dates of 2 Nov 1855, and 1 Jan 1855.  Can't find any mention in the Nelson Examiner for dates around that time.  It seems odd to me that dates at opposite ends of the year would have such close registration numbers.  I must read up on what the numbers actually come from!

Nobody knows of any single immigrant database for NZ?  I'm almost tempted to chat with my partner about doing it as a project.

Sounds like I should be volunteering to work on that project!  I have now looked at the list of every ship into Nelson, and nada.

The other oddity I found on the BDM was four Grays all born on the same day - 31/1/1859, (although the newspaper birth notice for Alexander John says 4 November 1858), and all four Grays have consecutive registration numbers.  Makes them look like quads!  I just don't know enough about the new numbers yet to figure that one out.
