I've just found a possibled death for Archibald in 1887, St Giles , Edinburgh. aged 56.

Did it give any length of time after cause of death or did it just say 'sudden' Are there any other details under where died e.g usual residence?

He could have been at sea and she didn't have any money.

There should be some records for South Leith Poor House that might give more information. I've found this link on the Workhouse site but can't get it to open - it might be that Firefox won't open the page  Sad

Sorry, Geno  Embarrassed

Firefox is a browser - an alternative to Internet Explorer. If you click on the link can you get it to open?

I'll have a look at Archibald's cert.

Have you traced Christina back to her parents, found her siblings, etc. yet?

Archibald Gillies, Hammerman,  died 25 August 1887 in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Usual residence <what looks like> 14 Cooper Street, Leith

Married:
1. Christina Bruce
2. Christina McDonald

Parents - Archibald Gillies, Crofter, dec. and Catherine m.s. McLeod, dec.

Cause - Aortic Mitral Cardiac Syncope

Informant - Christina Gillies (widow). Signed with a X. Present at death

SP shows a marriage for Archibald Gillies and Christina McDonald in South Leith in 1881.

So he married the year after your Christina's death.

I've just looked at Christina's death cert. It says under her name:

'Pauper formerly General Worker'
Married.

It would seem that she was in the Poor House because she had no means of support  Cry

Either Archibald was away at sea or they had split up or something like that  Undecided

Have you tried the Kilmuir parish for possible  brothers and sisters  of Christina?

Hi Geno    if you contact a Library in Edinburgh they will give you the number where the Poorhouse records are kept in Edinburgh. It is not nice knowing our relatives were in the Poorhouse but the information they had about the inmates was Vast,i had to go through the Glasgow section but the pages of information i  got from them would have cost me a fortune on S/P and it was only £6.50
